Obama's gift

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a radical offshoot of al Qaeda, has taken control of Iraq’s second largest city.

Iraqi police and security forces reportedly fled Mosul prior to the attack, leaving the facilities of the city open for plunder. Mosul was a key area of focus for U.S. forces in an effect to stabilize Iraq, and large amounts of military hardware was left in the city for the Iraqis.

Iraq’s parliament speaker said that ISIS took control of the city’s airport and obtained helicopters. ISIS also took control of U.S. Humvees, which they are now proceeding to send to Syria.

The Humvees are reportedly in fine condition. The vehicles would be a significant upgrade to the current equipment that ISIS has, and it further increase their ability to carry out attacks in both Iraq and Syria.

One interesting note is that the U.S. military gave these Humvees to the Iraqi military, which was long ago infiltrated by Iran-backed groups that killed Americans.

Ah, this is a gift from Bush/Cheney. It's a gift that just keeps on giving.

Michael Scheuer has a recent interview saying going into Iraq allowed AQ to be pushed further west for a whole new generation of AQ. If we had handled Afghanistan differently, this would not have happened, but removing Saddam was a big mistake too. He should have been given carte blanche to do what he needed in Iraq regarding any AQ. Making the Iraq border porous was a HUGE mistake.

Michael Scheuer also blames the bombing of the legal govt of Libya for spreading AQ even more pushing them even further west into Syria and now into Africa. He says they will eventually wind up here if our policies continue.

Michael Scheuer is former CIA head of the Bin Laden unit in the counter terrorism area.

You realize that Michael Scheuer advocated genocidal levels of violence against al Qaeda, don't you? Before he latched on to the Ron Paul profit angle, he was critical of the Bush administration because of their relative kid gloves approach.

Yup! I do know that. I said before, that he's not an anti-war type of guy. He covers that in the same interview. The BIG difference though is that he was mainly talking about getting AQ, who did the dirty deed called 9/11 for such violence there. He says we play these non "declared wars" that are just no-win games with "gloves-on" that don't go anywhere but create additional problems. He does say they respect force. Targeting the wrong folks though, is never workable--just makes more enemies that want to join AQ. Michael admits as much.

Now, when pressed Scheuer admits that Bush did have the opportunity from the Taliban to get BL turned over as well; that Clinton had the opportunity to kill him but didn't.

Furthermore, he still pushes the point that it is our interventions in their lands, the bases on their lands etc. that are generating terrorism on Americans. So he may want to have "killed anything that moved" in Afghanistan, he also seeks to deal with the causes and doesn't believe in actions that make more of them.

In Scott Horton's interview he says:

1) Declare War
2) Killing anything that moves in Afghanistan and get Bin Laden killed
( He says Bush did not make getting BL a priority)
3) In fifteen months the killing is over
4) Give SH Carte Blanche to do whatever he needed regarding any AQ in Iraq; he'd be ruthless
5) Stop our interventions in their lands

http://scotthorton.org/interviews/20...chael-scheuer/

It was titled: Welcome to a New Generation of Al Qaeda as a link to it. Scheuer is ruthless but he's also wise enough to determine causes without any defensiveness such as "blaming America."

The only thing I don't agree with him on is the need to kill "anything that moves" in Afghanistan. His words. I agree that Bush could have had BL turned over. I do believe in going after AQ with that kind of force though--even if some collateral deaths. Gloves off. So if you see anyone fleeing moving toward the eastern border--kill them all. Yet, some people think I'm a pacifist. They're wrong.

I don't understand the distinction you're trying to draw. Any "no kid gloves" approach is going to "target [some of] the wrong folks" though so I'm not sure there's any difference in your distinction in reality. The positive of Scheuer's approach is that it's so brutal that it's over fairly quickly and there aren't that many people left who will be interested in fighting back when it's over, I guess, although it seems like the Russians tried something like it in Chechnya.

You're misreading it. I'm not making any distinction on that. I admit it will hit some of the wrong folks. However, I just don't agree with him that it should be used all over Afghanistan--but on AQ, or suspected AQ areas and anyone fleeing toward Pakistan which are likely AQ. Definitely believe in using that on AQ though.
