Obamacare architect: It's not a typo - only states with exchanges get tax credits

Subsidies only flow through state-based exchanges

In his remarks, Gruber urged state governments to set up their own health insurance exchanges. A member of the audience asked: “It’s my understanding that if states don’t provide [exchanges], then the federal government will provide them for the states.”

Gruber responded: “What’s important to remember politically about [Obamacare] is if you’re a state and you don’t set up an exchange, that means your citizens don’t get their tax credits—but your citizens still pay the taxes that support this bill. So you’re essentially saying [to] your citizens you’re going to pay all the taxes to help all the other states in the country. I hope that that’s a blatant enough political reality that states will get their act together and realize there are billions of dollars at stake here in setting up these exchanges. But, you know, once again the politics can get ugly around this.” (Emphasis added.)

Obamacare was designed to implode and force the USA to a single payer system.

Whether this is right or wrong in your own mind is your own decision.

The unfortunate thing for progressivism is that it needs a lot of dumb, self-centered people who raise money for a living to actually be smart and focused in order to be a viable philosophy.

It's a tax on all of us. Obama said nobody under $250K a year would have a tax increase. Now, depending on how the exchanges are set up you either do or don't get a subsidy. So who does it benefit? The Rich don't really care because the price isn't significant to them. The poor like it because it's free healthcare. The middle class? Well, the middle class will (as always) do the majority of the paying like they always do because that's where most of the money is as a whole. The rich of course pay but there aren't nearly as many of them. So in conclusion a lot of well intended people were for this thinking it would help them get better and cheaper healthcare. It does neither. So we either repeal it or double down and go single payer with the same Govt. that brought you this law to begin with.

Red states:

After the dust clears over this...the GOP will be able to look at themselves in the mirror and say:

"Damn, the Dems snookered us! Because it was ONLY through our our never-ending campaign of hysterical whining, ridiculous sniveling and irrational complaining about Obamacare--and ONLY through our own failure to provide a serious and reasonable timely alternative....that .WE are the ones that ultimately made single payer happen. Holy crap!"

Single payer will never happen in America. Anyone who thinks its coming is clueless to the facts about it. Dems went running from it after the CBO found out the costs of it vs. insurance. That's why Obama didn't even try for it. There is no plausible scenario that exists right now that gets us to single payer.

Hope not, but that is what they (LLL) want. They Built Obamacare to fail. And when it does step 2 is single payer. Slow boil...

I used to think that too; seriously. No trolling; dead serious. A big part of me understands we should have/could have done better. However, the apoplectic, psychotic, and hysterical hyperbole the GOP has engaged in over ObamaCare has marginalized whatever legitimate basis they had for presenting a reasoned and genuine alternative to a serious problem they ignored for way, way too long.

It's the price you pay for over-playing your hand. Badly. Their poker face of talk radio blather and demagoguery has been exposed time and again. The "tea party" is only making the problem worse. Bottom-line is that the GOP still doesn't get it--not at all...and now they are digging their own grave. Unless some moderate prince charming rescues them from precipice of irrelevancy--at least on this issue...

So let me get this straight. Kotter's argument is:

Health insurance was broken because of government, government tried to fix healthcare with more government, that failed so the next step is to try even more government to fix the problem.

I wonder if he sees the commonality there.

Thats a fun discussion. When the Senate is no longer Harry's private playground I will be interested to see the reactions, knowing it will be negative and loud, when the "reasoned and genuine alternative" is front and center and cannot be silenced by Harry's rules.

The majority of people, looking at Gallup, Rassmussen and almost every other poll, are not happy with ObamaCare and every week more negatives pop up and the cost grows and the benefits delivered erode. The simple hard to swallow truth is its a terrible piece of legislation and it is impossible to implement and administer. And Obamas delays that shove the worst parts under the rug for a couple more years can't save the ACA.

If Democrats were honest they would entertain ideas to change it and make it better and improve it. Yet that has never happened and it won't be.

That's because we live in a fascist state that was recently voted among the top ten "corrupt" states in the nation...based on the special-interest pandering, nepotism, cronyism, and one-party rule that has dominated this state for the last 10-15 years (minus Johnson and Daschle)...

You seem fine with that; kudos, I suppose for "manning up." But it is more than a bit hypocritical and ironic coming from someone who claims to support fiscally "conservative" policies...but has never, ever (to my knowledge) every protested the immense federal subsidy we receive from farm "subsides (welfare)" and ethanol "subsidies (welfare),"reservation-federal land-'Lu-Lu' payments and other "subsidies (WELFARE)" that our fine, fine state receives.

I swear...there is so, so much this state has to offer. It is a GREAT place to raise a family; good economy, good LOW-pay job opportunities, and great outdoors environment for hunting and fishing. I'm proud to call SD my home. However, buttheads who bury their heads in the sand (or other dark places,) and ignore the realities of modern America...while they simultaneously hord/beg for federal government payments and subsidies....well, you folks deeply, deeply embarrass me. Redneck closet-racist douchebag rancher-farmer-"small" business types that OWN this state are MORE than a tad bit embarrassing. Just sayin'....

At least to educated and real Americans....
