I lived in Ferguson briefly around 1990, and that was a mistake.

Setting aside the fact that the looting shows that it's town full of criminals, my enduring memory of the police is their treatment regarding city stickers.

In a very weird revenue enhancer, the city required that people buy stickers for their cars and put them on the windshield. It was dumb, but you had to do it, and they were all due on a particular random day (call it July 1st for this story, but I don't remember the day).

The police would drive through the apartment parking lots early in the morning of July 1st - we're talking 3 am early - and give tickets to everyone who didn't yet have the sticker. Aside from the economic discrimination of disparate enforcement against younger renters, it was a pretty classless thing to do.

So it's my first year there and I didn't know about the stickers, and I get a ticket. So I grumble about and then go pay the $xx for the fine and then pay the $xx for the sticker, and put it on my car.

Then a couple of nights later, I get a second ticket. The police had come by again and apparently I didn't have the sticker in the proper spot on my car, so they gave me another fine.

I generally think that police are in a tough situation dealing with the public, and I tend to sympathize with them. But in the case of Ferguson, I'm going to stand back and watch the fight with detached amusement. They're jerks there.

I don't know why the media treats a riotous mob as a legitimate movement of some kind. When you try to turn a kid's death to your own advantage by looting and robbing and destroying other people's property, you have no place in any debate.

It sounds like to me, that the officer got shoved back into his driver's seat and the kid was outside of the car. Cop got pissed/feared for his life and let one off from the car. Kid runs away and then gets plugged multiple times while he is fleeing the officer.

The kid was wrong to assault the officer but the explanation at this time seems more like CYA than what actually happened.
That's certainly possible, but is the answer to riot first and bring in the menagerie of civil rights leaders to weep and gnash their teeth or figure that out through an investigation?

Yeah, all that does is make the police look better. I figure you have two linked yet independent things happening. You've got people concerned about the shooting who are legitimately protesting. In parallel, you've got criminals who recognize that the police are tied up with the protesters, so they're robbing places while they think they can get away with it.

I've heard when outraged to the point you think a riot is in order your first priority is to loot a liquor store.

It helps to fuel a more effective riotous mob.

Didn't you see that south park where they go to Topeka drunk on Peppermint Schnapps?

It's only going to get worse when the cop is found completely innocent, and rightfully so, if the guy wrestled for his gun in the car.

The media, again, will be the cause of riots because they pander to their audience ($$$$).

So what you're saying is the STL rioters are just as intelligent as SP characters.
