Police Militarization are you worried about it?

So I find this pretty alarming, most of us don't think about this sort of thing but i've been hearing about this going on for awhile now. I did a tour in Iraq about 5 years ago and I can say cops do NOT need MRAPS, grenade launchers, machine guns, and other stuff we used in a combat zone to do police work in the US. Especially in small towns which it seems a lot of this stuff is going.

'As Karl Bickel, a senior policy analyst with the Justice Department's Community Policing Services office, observes, police across America are being trained in a way that emphasizes force and aggression. He notes that recruit training favors a stress-based regimen that's modeled on military boot camp rather than on the more relaxed academic setting a minority of police departments still employ. The result, he suggests, is young officers who believe policing is about kicking ass rather than working with the community to make neighborhoods safer. Or as comedian Bill Maher reminded officers recently: "The words on your car, 'protect and serve,' refer to us, not you."

This authoritarian streak runs counter to the core philosophy that supposedly dominates twenty-first-century American thinking: community policing. Its emphasis is on a mission of "keeping the peace" by creating and maintaining partnerships of trust with and in the communities served. Under the community model, which happens to be the official policing philosophy of the U.S. government, officers are protectors but also problem solvers who are supposed to care, first and foremost, about how their communities see them. They don't command respect, the theory goes: they earn it. Fear isn't supposed to be their currency. Trust is.

Nevertheless, police recruiting videos, as in those from California's Newport Beach Police Department and New Mexico's Hobbs Police Department, actively play up not the community angle but militarization as a way of attracting young men with the promise of Army-style adventure and high-tech toys. Policing, according to recruiting videos like these, isn't about calmly solving problems; it's about you and your boys breaking down doors in the middle of the night.

SWAT's influence reaches well beyond that. Take the increasing adoption of battle-dress uniforms (BDUs) for patrol officers. These militaristic, often black, jumpsuits, Bickel fears, make them less approachable and possibly also more aggressive in their interactions with the citizens they're supposed to protect.

A small project at Johns Hopkins University seemed to bear this out. People were shown pictures of police officers in their traditional uniforms and in BDUs. Respondents, the survey indicated, would much rather have a police officer show up in traditional dress blues. Summarizing its findings, Bickel writes, "The more militaristic look of the BDUs, much like what is seen in news stories of our military in war zones, gives rise to the notion of our police being an occupying force in some inner city neighborhoods, instead of trusted community protectors."

Be more worried about this administration, the media (they control the mindset of the population with their message) and the DoHS than the police.

Every Sunday network news program this morning used the term 'militarizing of the police force' so I guess I should be worried about it.

Demonize the cops and you demonize officer Wilson. No one is interested in the truth.

The earlier pic is an M114 APC. The M114 is a modified M113, its used for Command and control, secure comm, and for rapid mortar deployment because it can hold a 4.2 mortar and rounds in a ready to fire mode.

Something is wrong with THAT.

Yeah, it's not just violent crime, it's all crime, and I doubt it's because the police "kick ass". Also, crime in the US is down to about 1960's/1970's-levels, but it's still much higher than most of the first world.

150 years ago, the Erp brothers were accused of police brutality and using excessive force.

Hell, they even shot some outlaws in the street.

Maybe they did, but their communities saw a reduction of crime.

John Oliver is, at this very moment, delivering a brilliant dissection of the militarization of the cops. As soon as it's on Youtube, I'll post it here, if someone else hasn't first.

Reducing Crime

From Mr. Sherman, a resident of ‪#‎MarionCounty‬, ‪#‎Florida‬:
"On 5-18-14 I received a call from my 22 year old autistic son. So I immediately got in my truck and went to where my son was being ticketed.

As I drove up on the right hand side of the road adjacent to my son's car, I did not leave my vehicle, I kept it running. The officer turned around and asked "can I help you?" I said "I'm his father." The officer yelled at me to leave the premises. I stated "I'm his father, and just wanted to tell you he's autistic." He turned around and said, "Leave or you'll be arrested!" He started walking towards me and said "you're under arrest." I said, "for what?", I kept saying over and over all I wanted to do was tell you he's autistic. He just replied, "you're under arrest."

But I was sure I hadn't broken any laws. This was when I said, "no I'm not under arrest, I haven't done anything." I was still sitting in my truck with the door closed when another officer drove up. The other officer opened my passenger door and proceeded to climb in and push me out. As I came out, I was standing in front of the officer, and he grabbed me and tried to throw me on the ground. When I didn't fall down he tased me (and I have heart trouble). I went down on my knees, then both officers jumped on me and slammed me into the pavement. They handcuffed me laying on the ground and put the taser to my lower spine and tased me four more times. I was put in the police car and taken to jail, where I posted bond."

*** ACCOUNTABILITY CHECK (2) Please Contact the STATE ATTORNEY NOW & tell them to drop Roy Sherman's charges! CALL Brad King, 5th Judicial Circuit: 352-671-5800 & EMAIL bking@jud5.flcourts.org (reference case # 42-2014-MM-3929-A)

Roy L. Sherman is facing 3 criminal charges for allegedly "assaulting a police officer & resisting arrest".

I've read bond rates have been unreasonably high in some cases and now some demand cash. One guy, a wealthy man, had all his assets seized and accounts frozen with no money left to defend himself with an attorney. He just found these things seized one day with no warning. Due process is declining too. These are police state acts.
