It is fun until you have to do it 6 times a day for the first week. Last week it was 4 times a day.
As of today... I'm starting them on a thrice daily schedule. 8AM, 4PM, Midnight It is a little early for this but I don't have much of a choice because there are 2 days this week where I need to be somewhere for 8 hours and they aren't gonna get to eat so trying to acclimate them to this a touch earlier than I normally would. |

Philly and Hoshi are 6 weeks old. Philly weighs 11.5lbs and Hoshi weighs 10lbs.
Grilled Cheese is 3 weeks old now and weighs 7lbs. They are starting to spend half days in the goat pen with the big girls and, damn, I am glad for it because I am tired of having to clean out the pen. The pen that lives in the kitchen because I don't have another space where it will fit easily. Had to go do my side-gig today so they spent the entire day outside and they were VERY happy to see me. Goat babies chasing me! |

Serious question… why do farms keep goats? Do you eat them? Do they cut the grass? I get cows, horses, and chickens utility, but are goats just for fun or do they serve a purpose?

Yeah I'm curious why you chose goats over more traditional stock like chickens or pigs, Janx
I know some people like goat meat/milk, but wouldn't something more traditional be more profitable? I'm a huge fan the Homestead Rescue tv show, and I'm always surprised when the homesteaders prefer goats over other options |

1) An cow weighs 600 (miniature) to 2,200 (standard) pounds while an angry Myotonic goat weighs 150 pounds. I can tank a sneak attack from an angry goat far better than I could a cow. Especially as I'm out here, basically, on my own now. 2) Myotonic goats will produce an equal amount of meat to cows (meat to bone ratio) on 2/3rds of the food... so it costs substantially less to keep goats than cows. 3) I have the ability to grow a lot of my own food here but meat based protein is skyrocketing in price so I wanted to be able to be more self sustainable. Since these are meat goats... they meet my needs. 4) They actually do keep my lawn down. I mowed twice all of last year and it was glorious. 5) Mine faint... and it is highly amusing. 6) Goat meat, price per pound, fetches a bit more than cows do at auction. 7) Grew up eating goat and it isn't exactly the easiest meat to find short of going to a specialty butcher... where you will pay specialty butcher prices. |

I honestly had no idea there was such a demand for goat meat/milk in America, always knew there was a niche but didn't think it was that lucrative
Always thought chickens, eggs and whatever else sold better If you personally enjoy goat meat it definitely makes more sense, but I've never had it... what would you compare it to, lamb maybe? |

Another two babies born at 9PM tonight. Another first time momma that had no ****ing clue what to do with the babies.
Two more bottle babies living with me in the house. One boy (Meatball) and one girl (Nyota). Pics later when I snag them for their next feeding. |

Tonight was ROUGH.
One of my mommas is heavily pregnant and couldn't get the kid out. Dude hung out her back end for 5 minutes and she could not, for the life of her, get him out. I burst the sack and felt for a bite reflex... which I thankfully got. I grabbed onto him and when she pushed I lightly pulled. Meatloaf was born at 9:30PM. Momma was still struggling for 15 minutes and I see another sack appear. I give her some time and by now she is exhausted and lies down. I give her some more time but 15 minutes later and the sack is only playing peekaboo from her back end. I get her back up and take a look... ****ing hooves, not a head. I try to get the hooves back in and pull the head forward but, instead, the head slips out with the hooves. At this point I don't really have a choice so I hold on to the baby and momma grunts and walks away. Baby did not survive. Spoiler below not for the squeamish.
Spoiler!
Momma is out there still looking huge but not actively pushing anything so I don't know if there is a third one in there she doesn't have the energy to push out or what the **** is happening with her. I've basically worked 18 hour days the past 4 weeks and 16 hour days the 4 weeks before that. I'm ****ing exhausted and spent. |
