You didn't put an option for NOT making ends meet. My 40-50hr a week job went to a 24-32hr a week job about 6 months ago and it's catching up to us now. Didn't expect it to last this long. Even part time/side jobs have been hard to come by around here. Life goes on.

OK now but that can always change.
Hang in there man. Hopefully better times are coming. Also - it's not unusual to have things get better financially as you get older and the kids are gone and you get promoted up the ladder, you get the house paid off and stuff like that. Best wishes for you and your girl. |

Ironically, I'm in better financial position now than I've ever been in my life.

Luckily, my wife and I have low overhead. We rent an apartment, and have no kids, and have both kept our full-time jobs through these bad times. As was said, though, nowadays that can all change in an instant. That's the scary part: even those of us out there on solid footing, if a pink slip comes along, we're screwed.

Things have been on a long slow slide downward since my wife was seriously ill last year. It is getting to where the paycheck is not lasting the month. The wife is currently going to school so that will help down the road. I am just praying we still have our house by that time.

I know that we could be much worse as well but it still sucks. We have been able to maintain all the basics and necessities thus far without much problem. Cards are getting maxed and savings is basically gone now so the "cushion" is gone. Our electric stove died over the weekend too...when it rains it pours. Again I say, life goes on and we will get by.

after awhile it doesn't even seem real anymore. 120 for a new tire, throw it on the credit card, new brakes throw it on credit card. Heat bill? well they can't turn it off when it gets cold.

I'm not going to go out and pay cash for a Benz, but the bills are paid, we buy everything we need and a lot of what we want, we contribute 15%-20% of our salary to retirement and there's usually a little bit left over at the end of the month to throw into savings or put toward the principal on the mortgage.
Overall I'd say I'm pretty lucky, but we'll have another mouth to feed come January, and if either one of us got laid off we'd be SOL. |

For sure. I can't whine too much because thus far we still have our DishNetwork, our high speed internet and 4 cellphones. Once we have to start getting rid of them things I will start whining for sure.

Things here are looking up. October was my best month of the year for commissions and the local economy seems to be moving in the right direction. I'm feeling comfortable enough to finally spend some money on a couple of home projects we've been putting off. Nothing huge, but I'll drop a few thousand on some concrete and landscaping work now that more people are dropping their thousands with me on carpet, tile and wood.
