I work in the Elections trade.....and on election day....I work long hours. Today would be one of those days and I'll more than likely end up working a 20-22 hour day.

So....what's the longest shift you've worked? And what were you doing?

36 hours in 85...at Arrowhead/Kauffman stocking coolers with kegs. I think the Raiders were in town. and the Royals were in the playoffs on the same weekend. Oh the things you can do when you're 19.

When I was in the Army it wasn’t uncommon to work +36 hour days pulling guard duty, getting ready for inspection, and/or in fixing a piece of “float” equipment because two Batteries went down at once with the same problem.

When you're on a ship at sea, you put in long hours every day. Work, sleep, play cards, that's it. Typical day was probably 12-14 hours, plus watches. What the hell else are you going to do - you're in the middle of the friggin ocean.

When the ship was in the shipyard, though, that REALLY sucked. I lived close to the base, but the shipyard was on the other side of Norfolk and it took about an hour to drive it in traffic. I had to get up at 5:00 a.m. in order to make it to work on time, and on a typical day I'd get home exhausted between 9:00 and 10:00 at night. Plus every third day you had duty, which was almost better because there was no driving involved. Add in the abject poverty and my ex-wife to the mix, and **** that was a miserable time.

**** that shit don't do it if you don't have to unless it's a job you're passionate about. Lifes too short. I don't buy the cliche of it being a character building experience. You could work a marathon of hours but the minute your company sees your salary affect their bottom line you're gone. At the end of the day your hard work is making someone else rich.

Did some 24+ stints while in the Army, but I was young then. I think it would kill me now. Not a work shift, but I once drove from Spokane, WA to Columbia, MO only stopping for gas and to grab a snack. Took me 28 hours. Never again will I do something like that, insanity starts to kick in around the 26th hour.

Post military, it was last week. Worked 27 hours in 2 days. Went in Wednesday at 8am and, aside from lunch, didn't leave til 5:15am. Went home, showered, changed clothes, shaved and came back at 8 and worked til 4pm. Immediately went home and crashed and didn't wake up until 6am.

I am so there with you. I shoveld asphalt one summer in Missouri and poured concrete the next year.

I don't care if it is 105 outside with 80% humidity and standing on 450 degree asphalt, I'll do that every time over working with concrete.

What years were you there? I was at NAS with VAW-124 back in 93 & 94.
I'd add that during a deployment, the 12+ hour work days also cut down on the amount of free time that guys have to get pissed off at one another.
