Agreed, but snopes has done a pretty damned good job of attempting to debunk stuff from both sides of the aisles. It's not mediamatters or factcheck which seem to be much more politicized, just from the fact that they're overtly political in nature and content, whereas snopes goes after anything that needs debunking.

All I can say is, I've never given this story any thought at all, but I have a hard time accepting the document that they released is a legitimate document having made my living working with Photoshop the last decade. I've always thought Obama was born in Hawaii - but even with that belief, the document that they put out to prove it appears to be a pretty cut and dried photoshop job. Anyone who has worked with photoshop would be able to easily identify this document as a manufactured fabrication pretty easily. I've tried to rationalize how this can be as it is - but there's no scanner that I've ever heard of that vectorizes individual elements of any document and places them on their own layer in a PDF document. The entire notion is a panacea for designers. I only WISH such a scanner existed.

I didn't realize snopes was disliked by some. I guess it quite squarely destroys lies that some people really want true.

Its apparently become fashionable in some circles to, inexplicably, for no good reason whatsoever, say that snopes is not a good source. Even though they cite everything.

In a way it makes sense though, when your argument is thoroughly trashed and discredited, the only out, assuming your brain refuses to admit that maybe it was wrong, is to try to discredit the source which debunked you.

Arpaio did not reveal anything new. The birthers immediately attacked the document as soon as it was released with this same layering argument last year, and not even a horde of bona-fide experts all explaining that scanning and pdf software could easily produce what they found objectionable, ever made a difference to them.
