Aquinas isn't using the term "proof" (actually, its Latin equivalent) in any other sense other than a logical argument proof. Logical argument proofs are different in the sense of "proof" that we commonly think of. It's like "theory" in science, in the sense that it has a specialized meaning.

A logical proof is valid conclusion from the premises offered. It makes no judgment on whether the premises offered are themselves factually accurate. For instance, "Socrates is a woman./All women are mortals./Socrates is a mortal." is a logical proof, because the conclusion follows from the premises, despite the fact that Socrates is a man.

FTR, I'm not saying that religion is the answer, as it's not the answer for everyone. I do think that you have to feel something that gives you some sense of importance. You have to have something that motivates you. If life is pointless, why live? For a lot of people though, religion is one tool in helping us from becoming completely depressed.
