Killer apps for Android?

Since there's an iPhone version, I figured I'd start a Droid version. After being handcuffed by Sprint's SERO plan for the past two years, I finally ordered my LG Optimus S last night. It'll be here in about 24 hours. So, what toys should I play with when it arrives?

I don't know but I'm sure its crazy fast.

The Quad-core is not compatible with LTE, so the 1st models in the US will only be dual-core.

Samsung's new Touchwiz (and the SGS III) looks shit. Take Android + add bloatware and branding + send to carriers for more bloat and branding... At least they could have done something creative with the hardware. But no...

I've been so disappointed with the recent Android options.

Bloatware is only on a phone for the first 5 minutes you own it.

Depends on on the phone. And the preinstalled app bloat doesn't bother me much - like you say, easy enough to uninstall. It's the bloat that they bake into Android to try to differentiate the phones that annoys me. Based on the short video, the new samsung looks more like last generation Android than ICS, with a few gimmicks thrown in.

It'd just be nice to have some manufacturers making phones I liked. Ahh well.

What bloat can't be removed once you root? Not disagreeing with you, just curious.

If it's baked into the manufacturers skin then it can't be removed without flashing a modified ROM. For instance, on Samsung devices you can download a new launcher and use that, but you can't get rid of Touchwiz launcher.

All of these changes slow down the phone, and more importantly, contribute to a very fragmented Android.

For example, today Samsung announced the S III. So two years ago, they launched the original S and worked with Google on the Nexus S soon after. They have near identical hardware. The Nexus S runs Android 4.0.4 (the latest Android build). The Galaxy S variants run anything from Eclair to Gingerbread, but Samsung has already abandoned most (now all?) of them and won't upgrade them further.

There's nothing wrong with the hardware in those devices. Not cutting edge, but capable. But Samsung doesn't want to bother, because they've released a gazillion (no exaggeration) new devices that come first and they make their money off of selling new hardware, not actually supporting it. So you could have millions of Android phones running the latest software, but instead of have a fragmented mess.

I don't have a problem with skins. It's just that what Samsung announced today was really boring and shit, and yet it'll sell a lot. And in a year they'll abandon it, announce a new phone, and repeat. I hope Google can change that, and their cheap unlocked price for the Nexus is a great start! Hopefully the Motorola purchase goes through and they can begin to change the culture of these companies that wish they were still selling proprietary dumb phones.

I was pretty well set on going with the HTC One X (new EVO on Sprint), but the lack of an expansion slot and non-removable battery give me pause. On the other hand, the new Samsung has an expansion slot, a removable battery and a very slightly larger screen. Knowing that I'm just going to root it, I have to say initial blush tells me I should go with the Sammy.

I think for people that are going too flash their phone, the newest Galaxy is probably the best bet. I don't know much about CDMA phones, but you have to remember that this isn't the phone that Sprint will get. They'll get a branded, modified phone changed to support that network and whatever changes Sprint and Samsung want. This is the international GSM version - it'll never reach the US. We'll see different processors, different modems, etc. The original Galaxy S showed up on Sprint with a QWERTY keyboard...

Samsung seems to be doing better in supporting independent developers. The problem with flashing ROMs is that a lot of them don't do much. Generally, they take Cyanogen code and modify it, or simply port from a similar device (in this case, it'd be the international S III). While the code is open source, a lot of the hardware and drivers aren't. And that's when a lot of the performance issues come in when you flash ROMs. That's the difference between a Nexus phone and just flashing the latest ICS ROM that shows up. That's why I trash a lot of the Android "coding" community - but some of the them do decent stuff. They're just limited in what they can do.
