July 1st: Federal student loan rate doubles.

The Senate attempted to vote today to prevent that from happening. They were going to keep their vote revenue-neutral by closing a particular tax loophole used by the very wealthy.

It was blocked, by Republicans.

I didn't see a thread up about this. I just figured we needed to know about it.

Our students are doing exactly what Republicans and conservatives want them to -- they are proactively doing what they can to make life better for themselves by getting an education.

We're potentially rewarding them for their efforts by doubling what they will have to pay back, in order to protect a loophole for millionaires.

The Republican Party, theoretically for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Theoretically for simplifying the tax code. Is violating both principles, it seems, with their actions today.

We've got a couple months. Maybe things change soon.

Ask the democrats who robbed money from their own student aid reform plan in 2010 to help force feed Obamacare through. That reform plan would have provided funding past this 2012 date.

Less people will go to college, mainly the rich will be the only ones who can afford it. Since I already have my bachelors, it might actually be worth something in the future. WOO HOO!!

That was then and this is now. Now it is about removing a part of Obamacare so they can claim victory. I'm sure that there have been other opportunities to fix this prior.

Raising interest rates does fix it. Tell us what happens if they keep the rates low you pretend as if a bubble isn't caused.

I understand the sentiment, and if it was possible for an 18 year old to work and earn enough for tuition, you would have a point. But college costs have skyrocketed, and the days of kids being able to flip burgers or mow yards for college money are a thing of the past.

I am all for requiring kids to earn their way. But no one is going to go down that path if they do not believe they have any chance of earning enough money to actually make through four years of college.

A kid making 20k a year (which is a 40 hour work week at 10 bucks per hour), would, after taxes and assuming no other expenses (like food, housing, etc.) would still have to work almost two years, just to afford one year at UMKC. So I guess for kids who can live at home and completely live off of their parents and/or extended family, this might be an option.

Folks want to complain about the US not keeping with other countries in terms of how our kids perform in math, science, and technology...but at the same time you want to bag on a kid because he needs to take out a loan to be an engineer. Can't have it both ways.

Counting things like housing and transportation as part of your educational expenses (which is what you are doing) is bogus as hell. You would have to pay for things like that whether you are going to college or not. That's like saying a new wardrobe for yourself will cost $20,000 because you include the price of the car you are going to use to ride around and go shopping for the outfit.

It is not like jobs are exactly growing on trees either.

I think that a lot of people are realizing that it's pretty stupid to go to college if you have to take out a loan anyways. It doesn't even make sense, unless you are gonna be a doctor or something that makes you insta rich upon graduating.

Colleges should stop gouging students and profiteering on education inflation. They should unilaterally cut tuition costs and forgive all outstanding debts for students who have paid more than 50% of the principle calculated by applying the total amount paid in both interest and principle to date against the initial loan.
