July 1st: Federal student loan rate doubles.

The Senate attempted to vote today to prevent that from happening. They were going to keep their vote revenue-neutral by closing a particular tax loophole used by the very wealthy.

It was blocked, by Republicans.

I didn't see a thread up about this. I just figured we needed to know about it.

Our students are doing exactly what Republicans and conservatives want them to -- they are proactively doing what they can to make life better for themselves by getting an education.

We're potentially rewarding them for their efforts by doubling what they will have to pay back, in order to protect a loophole for millionaires.

The Republican Party, theoretically for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Theoretically for simplifying the tax code. Is violating both principles, it seems, with their actions today.

We've got a couple months. Maybe things change soon.

Quite honestly I hope you didn't take out a student loan for an education because it's showing in this thread to be a huge waste.

I also said work and save money if you still can't afford it take out a loan but you will pay a 6% interest rate. BTW you also act like the only people who have degrees have government loans. This isn't true.

So answer the question. What happens if the government were to have kept the student loans low and the bubble burst?

I don't see any living expenses on that chart, except for maybe the $172 for the student union (cafeteria fees maybe?) Are some of the other fees bogus? Probably...but I bet they are required if you want to go to school there. That adds up to 9300 bucks a year, and you have not bought a single textbook, or paid any rent, or auto expense, or anything.

to think that I bartended my way through college, I paid for everything, tuition, books, rent, bills, food, everything. Worked every night to pay for a worthless education. When I started at KU, tuition + books for 15 hours costed me about $1500. My last semester I think I had 16 hours and no books and it cost $4000 and that was when I was forced to work for free (internship). I can't even imagine how much more college has went up since I graduated.

There is no way one can work to pay for school now. It's gonna be all rich kids and a few poor pitty scholarships here and there.

Keeping student loan rates at 6% is not going to break the government. Obamacare will take care of that. I would rather see the government spend money on providing six percent loans so students could better themselves than giving ****ing billion dollar bailouts.

Bigger difference than you think. Maybe not so much for me, because I'm not 18 years old. A kid living at home to save up money for those expenses and be able to move out when he's ready is considerably different then going off to college, forced to live in a dorm, and eat out because there's no kitchen.

The difference being is that a wealthy person can afford to pay his mortgage and help with rent and college expenses.

Increasing the interest rate from what to what? And does that "double the amount they have to pay back"?

Perhaps they will consider the cost before they borrow more than is necessary. Or actually get a job while a student like many do so they don't have to borrow so much. Or complete a degree in 4 years.

No, now is now and the republican plan for actually paying for something without dumping money into a payroll tax, which, of course will be raided for something else later, makes sense.

Do you even know what part of Obamacare will get cut with the republican plan? The Prevention and Public Health Fund. The same Prevention and Public Health Fund the democrats wanted to raid for the payroll tax cut extension that passed this year.

Hey I'm for extending lower student loan rates. I just think we could easily find something to cut rather than raising a tax on someone that will eventually get raided by either/both parties.

I honestly fail to see how college don't make ****ing buttloads of money just off of the basic courses they require everyone to take. Standard math...one professor, 200 students, a three hours course at $350-400 per hour...that is a lot of money. Yet it seems that universities are always begging for more money from the legislature...I just don't get it.
