2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Not worth a new thread, so thought I'd throw this here.

Thinking about coming up for the Cards/Royals series in a few weeks. Haven't been to the K since the renovations, though it's always been one of my favorite parks to watch a game.

Have a chance to buy seats dirt cheap in a few areas - wondering if you guys would be willing to give your thoughts on watching a game from these seats, amenities, etc.

Sonic Slam
Loge (near Home Plate)
Dugout Plaza (near Home Plate)

Also, are the Diamond Box seats worth the extra cash? Seems like all you get is access to the Club and wider seats.

TIA.

I almost always sit in Dugout Plaza and love it. Best seats in the house for the money, IMO.

I can only speak for the Dugout Plaza, one of their benefits is that they are underneath the overhang, which means shade. The exodus from "close to the field" to under the overhang happens in about the 3rd inning on an afternoon game. Could make a difference if you got that Saturday/Sunday game.

Any issues with foot traffic if you're in the first row, or are they elevated a bit?

Yeah, it's elevated. Honestly, I can't recall ever sitting in the first row in that section, but I wouldn't think foot traffic would be a problem.

Edit: I don't think the first row of the Dugout Plaza is under the overhang. I believe the first row under the overhang is row GG.

Ironically, that's what I always try to get. Perfect seats. No issues. Not behind netting, either, so watch your lips.*

And United is right, no overhang here.

This is correct. If it comes down to Myers or Cain playing, Myers wins.

Therefore, the Royals would do well to acquire this guy. Not sure of the cost, but let's say is comparable to the Starling signing bonus, which was around 7. Next step? Work like hell to trade one plus other prospects for a legit. ML starter. Not an old, over-taxed, broke dick. A legit, in-his-primer starter. A #2 would be fine. Paying 7 for the ability to make this trade happen with no remorse is cheap money.
And this. Think of it as an extra 1st rounder and it suddenly gives you amazing flexibility to make a move for a SP.

We need to talk about the draft. We need some Major League ready arms.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/

According to MLB.com, we should probably be looking at:
Mark Appel, Stanford, RHP
Kevin Gausman, LSU, RHP
Kyle Zimmer, San Fransisco, RHP
Lucas Giolito, Harvard-Westlake HS, RHP
Michael Wacha, Texas A&M, RHP
Andrew Heaney, Oklahoma State, LHP
Chris Statton, Mississippi State, RHP

I think Giolito could be a great pick, if he falls due to spraining his UCL, based purely on what I've read.

I know next to nothing about the prospects in the draft. Appel is the only one I've heard of. This is where I read and learn from everyone else.

BPA. No matter the position. For the sake of argument, you take BPA even if he's a first baseman (not the case in this draft, obviously). Don't find yourself saying, "We can't take __ because we have __."

That's how you avoid Longoria because of a Gordon at 3rd. Get the absolute best talent available and worry about filling out a roster later. Also, though this isn't the case in KC, teams are allowed to trade prospects for proven ML talent.
