Co-director Peter Farrelly has revealed plans for a follow-up to the hit 1994 comedy about the cross-country adventures of two intellectually-challenged friends. But he insisted that the new film will be the first true sequel.

He told ComingSoon.net: "We're getting set to shoot Dumb And Dumber 2 in September. It's the first sequel we’ve ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."

2003 saw the release of prequel Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, but it did not feature the original stars. Farrelly emphasised: "We did not do Dumb And Dumberer. That was a studio thing.

"So we've always wanted to do a sequel and Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again'. He had just watched Dumb And Dumber and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it."

Farrelly will once again direct with his brother Bob, and Sean Anders and John Morris will write the screenplay.

He's been doing quirky roles trying to prove he's a real actor. I like Yes Man but that wasn't really a funny movie. That was 4 years ago and probably his last good movie. Fun with Dick and Jane sucked. Probably his last funny movie was Bruce Almighty almost 10 years ago.

Maybe its better they dont try again... all of the time thats passed, trying to bottle magic again, all of the egos involved, with Carreys looming largest.

The chemistry sounds all bad for this, let it die.

If the Farrelly Brothers are to be believed, their long-gestating Dumb and Dumber sequel is still on track, with the boys even revealing some plot details.

BEWARE OF DUMB SPOILERS BELOW

Speaking to Digital Spy, Bobby Farrelly said: "It's definitely something we've been hoping for a long time. We always wanted to get the two original guys Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back together and see what they're up to. Now it's almost 20 years after the original and the other guys are in a point in their career where they had so much fun the first time that they're willing to do it. We will make this movie."

As for the plot, Farrelly explained: “The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he’s having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys.”

The brothers hope to shoot the film in spring for an autumn 2013 release, and in case audiences were in any doubt as to the continuing stupidity of their two main characters, Farrelly added “I can tell you that there is no growth out of either one of them.”

Honestly, if they released D&D2 and Dark Knight Rises on the same weekend, I'd probably go for D&D2, that's how awesome that shit is. Hope this really is back on track!
