Why all the recent interest in Zombies and the Zombie Apocalypse?

I really don't understand all the recent interest in zombies and the zombie apocalypse. Does anyone have an explanation behind this cultural phenomenon?

As someone who is finishing up making a zombie movie, I think it's the chaos and uncertainty of the zombie genre that makes it more and more relatable. Not that chaos is a new phenomenon, but the 24 hour news cycle combined with easy internet access has proof of human aggression and the fragility of social constructs thrust into our thoughts constantly. It makes the idea of some disease or something tipping us into chaos a little more relatable and therefore more frightening.

Also, I just think zombies are way scarier than vampires. Mindless rotting monsters trying to eat your flesh? One bite can turn your closest family member into one of them? Vampires, which I love, cannot compare.

BTW, I am disturbed by the several Twilight references in this thread. I'm pretty sure most zombie fans wouldn't watch Twilight if you paid them.

I think its part of the cultural phenomenon of us against them mentality. In part it could also connect to the idea that people see society as a monster which they must conquer. Plus, blowing the heads off of zombies is fun.

I swear your script better not be like the following:

People trapped in quarantine zone due to weird illness.
Someone's infected.
Hot chick gets banged and dies from infected group member.
Running, shooting, running, dying.
Guts, brains, guts.
Last man out and nerdy (but hot) chick survive.
Disappointing ending when government official shoots them to protect quarantine.
OR:
Surprise Open-ended plot twist.
The end???

IMO this movie/vid on MTV started a zombie - thon that continues to this day

Dec. 1st 1982

-Vincent Price-

Darkness falls across the land
The midnite hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize yawls neighbourhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpses shell
------
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzy ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

I know on the predating. I guess the rest I can agree on. My view is slanted as I have been a zobbie/monsters fan since the early 80s.
