My understanding is that the NBC treatment involved finding a woman who had a relationship with a Mormon man and that elders from his church discouraged him from continuing the relationship by suggesting that if he were to marry her his marriage wouldn't be blessed (in the eyes of his church) and if they were to have children together their children wouldn't be blessed. It doesn't sound much different, in essence, than the way several other religions encourage marriages and child-rearing to be done according to their own beliefs. But depending on how the story is told and depending on who you get to tell it (in this case, the woman who apparently had a bit of an ax to grind), it becomes a hit job.

I was just channel surfing when I ran across the hit job.

First I saw an interview with some woman saying "My little girl asked me 'Why does our own church hate us so badly?' or some such crap, and then it immediately switched to some gay guy talking about how Mormons called him a monster, an abomination, wished he were dead, or whatever it was in the speech NBC had written for him.

Sounded like an impartial, objective piece of journalism, so I changed the channel and went in the bathroom and puked.

The partial truth was that Mormons, like many other religions (although that part remains unstated), prefer their members to marry within their church and raise their kids within the religion and that this woman, who apparently was unwilling to do that, felt offended by the interference of her boyfriend's more religiously observant friends/family in her relationship.

Yeah, it was apparently just a bunch of anecdotes from people who either had an ax to grind or a negative experience rather than some church-wide scandalous revelation.
