Krakaeur's Under the Banner of Heaven is a great read on Mormonism, provided that you understand he's really writing about the ultra fundamentalist, heretical offshoots. He does, though, also explain the mainstream chirch's history very well.

I don't think the program was a hatchet job. I think a true believer Mormon can be anything in America. There is nothing to disqualify someone from anything but there is some weird things in their beliefs beyond the undergarment thing they share with the Hassidic jews.

1. Multiple worlds with multiple Gods. They believe that God created many planets with many people and each planet has its own God. They go further to say that if you are good and special you can also become a God of your own planet.

2 Forgiveness. The Mormons believe that you can be forgiven of any sin except murder and denying the Holy Spirit. God is forgiving, until the second coming. After that, No more! You get what you get, so take care of your bad stuff now, before it is too late.


3 There are multiple heavens. There are actually three according to the Mormon doctrine. One for those that do just ok, one for those that do better than average, and one for those that are really, really good.


4. Priesthood. They believe that any worthy male can be given priesthood and have assigned duties. They did not allow this privilege to black men until 1978. Women are not allowed in the priesthood.


5. Jesus visited America. The Mormons believe that there were spiritual things taking place in America at the same time Jesus rose from the grave and visited his decuples. The belief is that he visited Bountiful, Utah.


6. Modern Revelation. The Mormons believe that the elected prophet of the time gets visits from god and gives him directions. The Mormons have a convention 2 xs per year and the prophet tells them what the big man said.

The 'prohibition' on caffeine and strong drinks is part of the Word of Wisdom, which is EXPRESSLY not commandment. It is considered divine revelation that serves as a recommendation for temporal [ie, in this world only] betterment. ie, these are things you should do if you wish to live this life as healthy and strong as God provides. Failure to comply doesn't damn you eternally, nor does it countenance ex-communication. It is enforced more strongly for those actively representing the church, missionaries and central leadership, for the sake of presenting a wholesome face of the religion.

That's the whole point this is worth talking about. Not just because it's simply weird.

And again, it's not religious dogma, it's a temporal health recommendation.

It is truly mind-boggling that, given the strength of the push to expand Federal influence of individual diets presently going on, that you'd posit that the presidency needs a personal coffee consumption litmus test.
