Protesters storm U.S. Embassy in Cairo

http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/11/world/...html?hpt=hp_t1

I suppose it's a good thing that "it doesn't have to be a good thing for us"....

Cairo (CNN) -- Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and hauled down the American flag, replacing it with a black standard with Islamic emblems, apparently in protest of the production of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

The incident prompted a volley of warning shots to be fired as a large crowd gathered outside, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene.

The replacement flag read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger."

Others expressed more general grievances about U.S. policy, chanting anti-American slogans and holding up bits of a shredded American flag to television camera crews in front of the embassy.

An embassy operator told CNN that the facility had been cleared of diplomatic personnel earlier Tuesday, ahead of the apparent threat, while Egyptian riot police were called to help secure the area.

The U.S. Embassy said in a statement Tuesday that it "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy," the statement said. "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

The incident occurred on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, as crowds gathered in somber remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people killed that day.

It is not clear which film upset the protesters in Cairo.

In 2008, an anti-Muslim and anti-immigration parliamentarian from The Netherlands sparked international outcry when he produced a film that portrayed Islam as a violent religion.

Geert Wilders' film "Fitna," which he released online, featured images of terrorist acts superimposed over verses from the Quran.

Basically, what the thuggish, bloodthirsty morons that inhabit these countries are finding out is that self-determination is a bitch when you're part of a backward koran-thumping movement that isn't capable of abstract thought. Arab Spring turned out to be a giant step backward, just like most people figured it would.

True they don't care about our rhetoric good or bad. BUT it's a gross oversimplification to say it's out actions. What it in fact is.. what they are TOLD our actions are.

The root cause of this is rampant levels of ignorance that causes a massive reliance on religious leaders for guidance.

In this case, (as you have pointed out) none of them have seen the video, they are protesting because various religious leaders told them to. Period.

Ignorance, poverty and an over reliance on religion is a seriously bad mix.

Honestly if everybody on Earth was just not religious, there might not even be wars anymore. I know religion is not seen as the direct effect, but it has a religious undertone adding fuel conflicts.

It's not that easy. It's IGNORANCE that is the real root issue. Religion is fine in the hands of people with access to education.

One problem is that the middle-eastern Muslim world is guided much more by their government than we are by ours - their demonstrations aren't generally organic and spontaneous as ours are; they're often orchestrated by the government, or by a specific religious leadership or political party. These orchestrating groups tell the largely uneducated people whatever they need to hear to get a good lather going, then they point the way to, in this case, the American embassy, or whoever their target is. There's no free press, so there's no reason to think that the people in the mob would know any better, so the leadership is free to lie, lie, lie, as much as they need.

And this leadership apparently has difficulty understanding that we're a free state, and our citizens can do what they want, without representing our own government, or even our nation, society, or culture in general. When they see some jackoff like Terry Jones spewing his vile, hate-filled rhetoric, they don't quite get that that is not a reflection on our culture. Add to that the thirty years of us propping up Hosni Mubarek, and that's all they need to hate our guts.

And then, on top of that, people like Terry Jones and whoever made this video don't quite get the fact that the hate they're peddling is going to cost lives - in this case, the State Department guy (and SA forum moderator, apparently) with a real wife and two real kids who are now fatherless. They're scoring their little political points and making their little YouTube videos to try and preach what they want to, without realizing that their actions have consequences.

Until both sides get some perspective and education on how the world works, I don't see this ending very well. Or at all.

(Reuters) – An American staff member of the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi has died following fierce clashes at the compound, two Libyan security sources said on Wednesday.

“One American staff member has died and a number have been injured in the clashes,” Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, spokesman for Libya’s Supreme Security Committee, said, adding that he did not know the exact number of injured.

Armed gunmen attacked the compound on Tuesday evening, clashing with Libyan security forces before the latter withdrew as they came under heavy fire. Reuters reporters on the scene could see looters raiding the compound, walking off with desks, chairs and washing machines.

He was a really good dude and will be missed.

Mitt Romney can go **** himself with a rusty steel brush for using this to gain political points.

I'm not so sure about that. I know plenty of educated religious nutballs who wish to bomb all muslim villages and invoke their agenda upon all who will listen. But yes, there are plenty who are fine. Just some of them ruin it for everybody.

I don't know if they're nutballs or not, but just in this thread, there have been several outright calls to violence, and even more degradations of the middle-eastern Muslim world as something less than human - two viewpoints which I would rather have died out around the time of the Conquistadors.

I certainly hope that I'm not coming across that way. My primary indignation is with the State Dept official who made the apologetic statement. That guy needs to be fired yesterday.

The Muslims involved in these "protests" are a result of ignorance which allows them to be manipulated by religious extremist and others with their own agendas. To be clear, calling them (them being the people involved in this type of activity) ignorant is a FACT not a slam. Raise those same people in an open environment where they have access to education and tolerance of others views and 99 out of 100 will be your typical moderate Muslim. (yes, there are plenty of moderate Muslims)

I will say that the current Arab culture that dominates the Middle East lends itself very easily to keeping people ignorant and easily led to violence and extremism.

I am hopeful however that things like the Internet will help with these issues as more and more generations grow up with access to a greater world of ideas. BUT with something like 20% access in Egypt... it's gonna to take a LONG time for that to outweigh the factors that press more heavily on them today.

Assuming we know the whole story, agreed.

Nah, you're good. I realized that your space lasers and directed lightning comments were lighthearted. I was aiming my comment at gems like these:

Reports now coming in that the US Ambassador to Libya was killed in a rocket attack.

Something has to be done. You can't not respond to this. I don't envy anyone who has to decide what though. No way to come out of this clean.
