Romney: 47% of Americans are victims

I guess this maybe the kill shot for his campaign. I know some of you believe you this and won't find a problem with what he said but as a person running for POTUS you probably shouldn't write off 1/2 the country especially in a disparaging way.

Quote:
A hidden camera video of Mitt Romney at a fundraiser shows him talking disparagingly of people who will vote for President Obama.

Said Romney: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what...These are people who pay no income tax."

He adds: "My job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

The “pay” has to come from somewhere.

You don't get SS, medicare and other payroll taxes back. Only federal and state tax withholdings.

You're making a faulty assumption, that the people in red states who receive entitlements are mostly voting Republican.

I have not read all prior posts, so maybe this has already been said, but it is a problem that Romney thinks this because:

Assume Romney is right that 47% paid no income tax for 2011.

Assume it is correct that Obama can not get less than 47% of the popular vote.

Romney conflates those two 47% factoids into some kind of belief that they are composed of the exact same people.

Considering that more that about 40% of potentially eligible voters will not vote.

Considering that polls indicate Obama gets more of the college educated vote than Romney.

Considering that polls Romney gets more of the over 65 y/o vote than Obama.

Considering that many over 65 y/o do not pay taxes because of their social security and reitrement benefits do not cross the pay some tax threshhold.

Considering that many over 65 y/o do expect government to provide Medicare benefits.

How could Romney think that those two 47% are the same people when college educated voters prefer Obama, over 65 y/o voters prefer Romney and 40% of people do not vote?

Romney would be a better candidate if he had better reasoning ability. He does not seem very smart.

I think it is a shame that some posts in this thread say that Romney spoke the truth.

The point from his statement is that 47% of the US population is hooked on government benefits, and that statement is completely untrue.

The funny thing is about a quarter of that 47% is made up of senior citizens, many of whom vote Republican.

It was just a stupid statement overall.

Bill Kristol rips Romney a new asshole for his sister wives to play with

Quote:
"It remains important for the country that Romney wins in November (unless he chooses to step down and we get the Ryan-Rubio ticket we deserve!)," Kristol wrote on Tuesday. "But that shouldn't blind us to the fact that Romney's comments, like those of Obama four years ago, are arrogant and stupid.

Noting that many of the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay income tax are core Republican groups like seniors and active military, Kristol added that "Romney seems to have contempt not just for the Democrats who oppose him, but for tens of millions who intend to vote for him."

As long as he isn't backing down from it, then he's got my vote. Obama would have deflected that shit and spun it with some shit words.

I saw Ari Fleischer on CNN last night talking about this and he did not even mention that the B*sh tax cuts were the event that got lower income wage earners and lower middle income people off the tax rolls.

It seems like the GOP ought to admit that the B*sh tax cuts were designed that way to make a poison pill that Democrats could not let them expire without impacting households who earn less than $50,000 per year.

It is not right for GOP to complain about the percentage of people who pay little or no federal income tax because they are the ones who knocked a lot of people off of the federal tax rolls.

More from Kristol. He pretty much destroys Mitt's statement

Quote:
Recalling that a good chunk of the 47 percent who don't pay income taxes are Romney supporters -- especially of course seniors (who might well 'believe they are entitled to heath care,' a position Romney agrees with), as well as many lower-income Americans (including men and women serving in the military) who think conservative policies are better for the country even if they're not getting a tax cut under the Romney plan. So Romney seems to have contempt not just for the Democrats who oppose him, but for tens of millions who intend to vote for him."

Seems like most people just scream "those evil rich people" when they hear the the words Bush Tax Cuts.

Fail? Talking out of your ass again, Pat.

Reagan alluded to reforming healthcare and some form of national healthcare on several occasions before and after he was president.
