walnuts

So I've got probably 10 walnut trees in and around my house. They drop all freakin over the place. Each year, I pay my kids $2 per 5 gallon bucket of walnuts they pick up and then just dump them in a pile in the woods for the squirrels. Anyone have any ingenious way to de husk them without doing it by hand? If there were an easier way to do it, I might consider processing them. thanks

no shit. I was gonna shell em and have the kids sell them at the local farmers market in gallon bags. I got about 7 done and said F this.

We cut a few ourselves for that very reason.

At least you know they're there if you are one day forced to need the resource.

no. I was told greener is softer and easier and less chance of worms. still a pain in the ass. They taste great fresh like that tho. Very soft and sweet, but too much work.

i try it all the time w/the walnuts and hickory nuts. get about a handfull shelled and just eat them. i guess if i could find someone that didn't like them to do the shelling, it might pan out.

We exchange pecans for cracked pecans every year. That machine would have made cave men fat.

I mow over the walnuts and hickory nuts. It's loud, they fly.... No way in hell I'm picking up 50,000 nuts.

We used to have a pecan tree in our yard, those are alot easier .. Handful of walnuts are good for you per day

Yeah, that's a different species of walnut than what I grew up around. The ones we had were round, wrinkly, solid black little deals that were hard as stone and just as difficult to crack.
