Larry Johnson settles drink-spitting suit for $100,000

Sorry if repost as I didn't see it in the first 4 pages.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...t-a-fair-jury/

Former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson is being sued in Kansas City by a woman who says he spat on her in a bar. But Johnson says he needs to move the trial out of Kansas City because it would be impossible to find 12 people there who don’t despise him.

Johnson’s lawyer, Jack T. Bangert, told a judge Wednesday that folks in Kansas City hate his client with such a passion that he could never get a trial in front of an impartial jury there.

“If we can’t get a change of venue in this case, it is insurmountable,” Bangert said. “We want to go anywhere but here.”

Bangert showed the judge newspaper articles, web posts and affidavits from two talk-show hosts, all attesting to how much Chiefs fans hate Johnson.

However, the plaintiff’s lawyer says those concerns are overblown, and that Johnson isn’t as famous (or infamous) in Kansas City as he thinks he is.

“We all know people in Kansas City who are not Chiefs fans who have never heard of Larry Johnson,” lawyer Charles Speer said.

The judge will rule later on whether Johnson is really so despised in Kansas City that the case has to be moved elsewhere.

Thank god Herm had nothing to do with that and it was 100% the starting runningbacks fault.

LJ couldn't play defense for shit but we all knew that going in.

Report: Larry Johnson settles drink-spitting suit for $100,000
Posted by Mike Florio on April 15, 2011, 4:00 PM EDT

APThe lockout is making us sufficiently frustrated to do something crazy like, say, spit a drink in a stranger’s face.

Speaking of spitting drinks in strangers’ faces, former NFL running back Larry Johnson will pay $100,000 for the privilege of doing just that in 2008, while he was playing for the Chiefs.

Deadspin has received via a “benevolent tipster” (not to be confused with, say, a malicious tipster) a copy of a letter confirming the settlement.

It appears that Johnson had made to Ashley Stewart a so-called “offer of judgment,” a device in civil litigation for conceding the case in exchange for payment of a set amount. It’s an increasingly common tactic for placing pressure on a plaintiff with a nothing-to-lose mentality; if the plaintiff fails to accept the offer of judgment and fails to do better at trial, the plaintiff becomes responsible for certain post-offer litigation expenses incurred by the defendant.

Stewart still has a claim against the club at which the incident occurred. The laws of each state have specific provisions for determining whether and to what extent codefendants receive “credit” for settlements made by one or more other defendants.

As a former Penn state running back I'm thinking this as some sort of pun, intendended or not.

great guy. Penn State loves him as a coach, and players that played for him love him as well. Definitely was the most underrated Penn State coach during those whatever years (dark? tarnished?) you want to call them.

O Brien even retained him on his staff so that goes to show.
