Congressional "scientist" notes that evolution is from the "pit of hell"
Dude is the chair of the House Science Committee's panel on investigations and oversight. LOL
http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2...t-of-hell?lite U.S. Rep. Paul Broun's view that the theories of evolution and the big bang are "lies straight from the pit of Hell" is getting more exposure than he might have expected, thanks to a video that was made at a church-sponsored banquet in Georgia and distributed by a progressive political watchdog group. The Georgia Republican is already well-known as an outspoken conservative Christian, due in part to his unsuccessful campaign to have 2010 declared "the Year of the Bible." But the latest comments have taken on an extra dab of controversy because Broun, a medical doctor, calls himself a scientist in the video and chairs the House Science Committee's panel on investigations and oversight. The video clip, distributed by the Bridge Project, was taken from a longer version recorded on Sept. 27 during the 2012 Sportsman's Banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Ga. Here's a transcript of the Bridge Project's snippet: "God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I've found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don't believe that the earth's but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That's what the Bible says. "And what I've come to learn is that it's the manufacturer's handbook, is what I call it. It teaches us how to run our lives individually, how to run our families, how to run our churches. But it teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in society. And that's the reason as your congressman I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I'll continue to do that." Broun's comments were greeted with applause, and they probably reflect how a lot of his constituents feel about the same issues. He's assured of re-election in any case, due to the fact that he has no Democratic Party challenger in next month's election. But how will Broun's latest pronouncements play out on a national stage? Will they have any effect on the presidential campaign? |

Not worth starting a new thread over, but here's another bit of stupidity from an elected official today: http://gawker.com/5949544/arkansas-s...ise-for-blacks

There's no reason you can't believe in God and science at the same time. But to deny the Big Bang and claim the earth is 6000 years old is just ignorant. You're no different than the Catholic Church punishing Galileo for proclaiming your earth rotated around the sun, or the flat-earth society.

Its probably discussed before but if god created the earth who created god? As I get older the more of an atheist I become. I wish I could believe more in god and an afterlife. It would be very comforting but its just seems so irrational.

Not sure how anyone could possibly applaud this.
I'd say the same thing if he were trashing the Creation theory. I'm Agnostic. |

I grew up straight country Christian. Great GF was a preacher. Did the works. Sunday school and church every week, VBS, camp, weekly Fellowship, etc. but I was too inquisitive. "God did it" was never satisfying enough for my questions. Teachers got frustrated trying to answer my questions. The older I got, the more I questioned. Which was my undoing. I couldn't accept a lifestyle that required belief in illogical things with zero evidence. Science allowed, and actually required me to question everything about my existence. Religion discouraged that.

I don't know if that's the case, but that's how I picture it.

1 Thank God for the First Amendment, this thread helps illustrate the need to recognize the most important inalienable right.
2. ....you don't find God, God finds you.... and you have to be seeking Him for things to be revealed, instead of the converse, where man wants to take credit by proclaiming his own enlightenment. |

I also have a friend who lives in Cali. He comes from a rich background, his grandfather is a big wig in Texas oil and he comes from millions of dollars. He was a **** up his whole life, whored himself out for heroin at one point even. Got stabbed 9 times at some party, he swears he was dead for a while and found God, he says the doctors thought he would be braindead for the rest of his life, but actually he's better than ever. He found himself and a good woman, he has a wife and 2 kids and making about $200K per year working for his dad and he smokes weed every single day too and gave up alcohol except the occasional social beer (he was a hardcore alcoholic too, even after he got out of prison). He attributes God for his new found life. So, when shit like that happens, it makes me think there is a good side of religion too. I haven't seen it for myself though.

Definitely a good side to religion. The overall morality taught, sense of fellowship, accountability, and sense of hope and inclusion is great for anyone. It's just too bad it gets tarnished and corrupted so badly after that point by so many.

If you really do the math, your last statement would be "...corrupted so badly after that point by so FEW." I have sympathy for people like Bump where a bad interaction with the church turned them off to the truth at such an impressionable age . It's not his fault, rather the fault of those that seemingly corrupted the Word for their use as a tool of fear and intimidation.
