Ohio State third-string QB Cardale Jones: “Classes are pointless”

http://tracking.si.com/2012/10/05/oh.../?sct=cf_t2_a7

Ohio State third-string quarterback freshman Cardale Jones gave his opinion on Friday via Twitter about what he thinks about attending class, reports the Detroit Free Press.

“Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain’t come to play SCHOOL classes are POINTLESS,” he wrote on Twitter.

Jones’ twitter account has since been deleted.

Jones is in his first season at Ohio State and hasn’t played this season. He will likely redshirt, and is behind behind Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton on the depth chart.

Jones spent a year at a prep school in Virginia to take care of his academics after signing with the Buckeyes out of Cleveland Glenville High last year.

I went to a community college with a basketball team and a dormitory. Most of the basketball team lived in that dorm, and when I was there, each member of the team had at least one girl (and usually 2 or 3) who would cook them food, do their homework for them, lend them their cars, etc.

So if this was the case at a tiny 2 year college, I'm sure it is just the same at big state schools.

Mr. Jones, if you think you are a can't miss NFL prospect, by all means just do the minimum to get by. If you fail in achieving that, don't bitch about the opportunity you passed up.

He's right.

Classes are pointless to those who don't care, especially since he won't have to learn shit to pass the actual class. They have their ways around that.

If you're too stupid to cash the paycheck, it's not your boss's job to do it for you. His pay is the opportunity to get an education. If he doesn't avail himself of that opportunity, that's on him.

Every program is dirty. Lots of dumb athletes are playing competitive sports for good academic institutions. Let's not make the ridiculous accusation that this is only happening at Ohio State.

Exactly. Kietzman always bashed the SEC saying their dirty, and are getting under the table money. Uh....hey dip shit......any big time division 1 football team is getting some sort of illegal benefit. Yes Kevin, even your beloved Wildcats.

i can speak for the Ohio/Pennsylvania schools as I'm sure it's like this is most of the east coast and the south, but when a player absolutely dominates at the high school level, no matter how stupid, no matter how much of a ghetto the school is, if he puts up stats, carries his team to the state championship and most likely plays both sides of the ball and runs some sort of sub 4.5, there will be a spot for him on a D-1 school, no matter how stupid, how thuggish, how ghetto.

if you play at a city school or a school with poor high school education but are a ****ing natural monster on the football field, the scouts will come to you from every big school. They will figure out a way to hide your grades, get you that pretty female to do all your work for you and follow you around, etc.

Those type of players get in because they put up ridiculous high school stats.

That may not be the case for this guy, but for most of them it is. I dont know what this guys high school stats/profile are but I know guys that never had to study or do a lick of schoolwork in their life get full rides to big schools because they can run a 4.4 and beat every high schooler in the district on both sides of the ball.

or guys in their sophomore years of high school come back after the summer for the junior years all bulked up on steroids and look like they swallowed another human in the summer. They also get looked at. Big bodies, fast bodies, they dont need smarts, scouts for these big D-1 schools work full year round just going to high schools, they dont care about the high schools education program moreso than what sort of athletes are they breeding and recruiting.

if a scout comes to you and they sell you on the school you dont have to apply, they know how bad your grades are, all you have to do is sign/commit and they will figure out the rest.

That's why (this happens in basketball a lot) where you see all the white skinny nerds sitting on the end of the bench, those guys are on the team to boost the athletic GPA of the team and the athletic program for the school.

take a look at the end of Kentucky's basketball bench sometime. 4 white guys that never see the court that probably get 4.0s and are just along for the ride. So it balances itself out. For every 1 dumb good player that can't pass an algebra test they have 3 engineers getting 4.0s that are happy to be apart of the team and go to practice.

That said, most student athletes do benefit from having structure (respective sport and school) in their lives, along with the degree. Whether they are actively engaged or not, they still have an opportunity to get an education and are learning more than they would if they didn't have the opportunity.
I'm certainly not going to prove anything and the only evidence that I have would be fifteen years of gradebooks to go along with APR and GPA reports. Even then, my evidence spans sports, with most of the students clearly understanding that they will not become professional athletes. However, that describes most of the student athletes in the US.

A couple of semesters ago, I had a couple of volleyball players in class. Out of 57 students, one of the girls was by far the top student in the class. The other girl was top five. Regarding football players, of the two that I've had most recently, one is currently in the NFL (with a degree in mathematics) and the other is in medical school.

I realize that there are student athletes that don't take college seriously. However, I would argue that they represent a distinct minority of student athletes.
