If Obama really cared about Big Bird, he'd ask all of his supporters to fast for a day and donate all of their food money to Sesame Street. He might even ask Michelle to skip a trip to Hawaii and donate that himself.

Again, I asked this in another thread, but don't think I got a response. What substantial cuts to spending besides Big Bird has Romney committed himself to? PS: Daily show just ran a clip of FDR addressing exactly what Romney/Ryan are doing right now. He said to beware people that say they believe in all the great social programs, but they will do them better, and it won't cost a thing.

He'll be working with both parties in Congress to settle on cuts and loophole closures. He was pretty clear about that in the debate.

I realize that won't be enough for you and that's OK. We don't need the votes of people who make saving big bird a higher priority than getting the economy back on track.

He has been pretty clearly vague on what cuts he'll be making, except for his hard truth for big bird which saves the US what amounts to nothing.

Yeah, Romney is the one keeping the whole Big Bird thing going. It's the primary focus of his campaign, not Obama's.

Neither candidate is going to give you the level of detail you pretend you're looking for. It's unrealistic to expect a President to hand Congress a list of cuts and be able force them to vote to enact them. Romney's approach is to set a goal (get spending down to X% of GDP) and propose a starting point (an across the board, non-defense discretionary spending cut of Y%) and then negotiate from there. See his website for specific X and Y.

I've got a question that I haven't really seen answered anywhere (admittedly, I haven't been following the threads very closely): where does the merchandising revenue for Sesame Street go? There are tons of toys, books, videos, etc with the Sesame Street logo and characters. They've got to be the #2 brand in merchandising after Disney. Does any of that money go back into PBS?

As of June 2011, according to this last set of financial statements, Sesame Workshop had:

- $289 million in total assets, including $29 million in cash, $47 million in receivables and $121 million in investments on their balance sheet;

- $232 million in net assets (after accounting for liabilities);

And yes, according to their own financial statements, Big Bird and his friends are invested in both private equity funds and hedge funds.

Now, what about the revenue, or money that Sesame Workshop takes in before expenses, from Sesame Street and related content and products? In 2011, Sesame Workshop made:

- Nearly $47 million from licensing;

- Around $42 million from distribution fees and royalty fees;

That amount totals nearly $90 million, before adding in support from corporate sponsors, donations and government grants to get to a total of more than $134 million in total revenues for the year.

Also, as a nonprofit 501(c)(3)corporation, it is not required to pay certain taxes. It does have some for-profit subsidiaries consolidated into its financial statements.
