Syria: Iran's Path To The Sea
Can somebody explain this to me, please?

Me either, but in the context he used it makes perfect sense. He called them their only ally and then in the next sentence "Route to sea" which means last hope.

He also uses "Route" in the next sentence and isn't referencing a literal path either.

Wrong, Dong. A gulf is usually a sea. A sea is a body of saltwater, usually connected with an ocean, and the terms 'ocean' and 'sea' are often used interchangeably. I'm sure Mitt went throught this analysis before he spoke.

Sorry, but you're wrong. A gulf is a large bay connected to a sea or ocean.

Do you refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Sea of Mexico? Didn't think (hope) so.

No because that is not its name. You see, there are formal names and there are generic descriptions. The body of water south of Louisiana is formally called the Gulf of Mexico. As a large body of saltwater, it also fits the definition of a sea.

I hope you are sitting, because this will blow your mind--The Gulf of Mexico is not only also sea, it is also ocean, because it is part of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Caribbean Sea is ALSO ocean, as part of the Atlantic Ocean. Really makes you think.
