If any one is interested in the differences between the show and the books up until the current time on the show, here are some of the main ones I can remember. No real spoilers involved, just differences:

Daryl and Merle are not in the books. There is a character named tyreese that is ricks right hand man sort of in the way Daryl has been. The fact that Daryl and carol seem to possibly have a relationship starting shows even more the link to tyreese as he and carol had a thing for while.

In the books, Shane never makes it out of the camp in the beginning. The tension between him and Rick boils over really fast and Carl kills Shane. While at the farm Rick drives back to the camp and digs Shane's body up to kill zombie Shane out of respect for his friend.

Dale would still be alive at this point in the books, but he would have survived the farm attack in the same fashion that Herschel did, with an amputated leg.

There were a few teenage kids with the group in the books when they get to the prison. I believe it was tyreese's daughter and her boyfriend but I can't remember exactly.

The initial prisoner interaction went down differently, less violent.

Michonne joined the group sooner in the books than she has in the show.

There are several other smaller differences but nothing to really affect the timeline or make a major difference to the story.

I'm sure there's something I've missed or forgotten about so for anyone else who's read the books feel free to correct me.

Some more observations on differences from where I've read up (through comic 2)

There is no Donna\Allen\Twins family group in the show that is in the comic.

In the comic, they go from the camp site to Hershell's farm. With a brief one night stay in the residential zone. Originally, they thought this was going to be a destination spot, and where Donna dies as they wake up the large group of walkers. There is no CDC at this point (maybe later? i haven't read that far)

Big spot - Dale actually hooks up with Andrea (Donna walks in on them doin the nasty). That would have made for a fine twist in the show, which they left out, sadly.

On IMDB they had Merle listed as part of the cast from that last episode. I wonder if they did a flashback scene and cut it.

I've read the comics up to the point we are in the show, and there is no contact (or even revisit) with them to this point. I have not read further, to tell if they do re-appear.

In the comic, there was no "walkie talkie communications plan" like they had in the Show, either. Rick basically took them to his Sheriff's office, gives them some guns and a police cruiser. He takes his and they go their separate ways.

If I remember correctly, there was a walkie talkie plan, and Rick does try to contact him every now and then.
