I don't remember much of that one. I saw it in 1979. I was an atheist college student and I was stoned half out of my fragile mind.

It makes sense.

In 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Paul talks about being all things to all people (excuse my paraphrase, please), but he wanders all those pastures for a single purpose: To shepherd the far-flung flock toward the path of the one true gospel.

Do property rights not go directly against the teachings of the bible?

That materialism is a path away from god? Yet here in america the religoius right strongly supports materialism over all things... including god. Is that blasphemy? Mammon isn't god is he?

One of the commandments is not to covet the things of others, yet that's the basis for our whole economic system. Someone else gets something cool, you get one.

Yeah, Jesus wasn't an economist, but if he was I highly doubt he'd approve of the US economic system. I just find it interesting that the battle cry of the group who supports Jesus is "Don't let the poor people take our stuff!!"

I'm not condemning capitalism or property rights, I just think Jesus probably would.

I suspect he would regard the pursuit of wealth folly. That being said, Marx was a materialist as well, he just moved the means of production to the workers rather than the owner. To say Jesus would be a communist is to presuppose he would be a materialist, which is simply not true.

By the way, I think we can think of the current left and right wings as old world Pharisees and Sadducees. One group was conservative and the other liberal. Jesus condemned both.

Whether a person chooses materialism or not, has nothing to do with government. In a free country, one is free to choose their own path on such matters.

Jesus was preaching a path of personal and individual salvation. His Kingdom was not of this world. So he was not talking about what the govt should do, or what the govt should make people do, but what a person needed to do to enter his Kingdom on their own free will. Govt is force...not free will. Govt is not about delivering personal salvation. Govt's job is to protect fundamental rights. Your right's end where another's begin in the sphere of govt's authority.
You're mixing apples and oranges and trying to apply the same rules to them. This is an error of logic.

So what if he did. He rendered unto Caesar what was his. I think you and others who think like you should do the same. While you're at it, encourage others to be give and be kind on their own volition. That's what Christ would do.

As far as I know, ancient societies didn't really have capitalism...there was a lot of command and control economies such as Egypt and there was welfare under Rome.
