They may have been there, but I don't recall the R's being anywhere near this combative about abortion in the past. Aside from that, your assessment is probably fair. However, it's also true that the unwillingness of the party to change with the times is costing them a ton of votes from my generation. I just don't see how it's sustainable at this point.

I deviate from party lines fairly frequently. Even the post you called a "shill post" (but of course, not as a slam) indicates a deviation from party lines. I don't share the views of the Republican party on many, if not most, social issues.

It's not. the attitudes changed about gay's in the military, gay marriage in people under 50. They saw it as no big deal. They see abortion as settled a long time ago. Birth control, really? I dont think all the R's are on board with this track but it sure seems that the loud part of it is on board.

I think some of this perception might come from the 2004 election. In 2004, the Bush campaign did what Obama is doing in 2012. They chose to highlight divisive issues in an effort to excite their own base. They sacrificed, at least to some extent, an appeal to independents in exchange for trying to expand the base vote. Obama is doing the same thing right now with his war on women initiative and his Bain is the devil (ie war on capitalism) approach.
