Stem cell research no longer requires fetuses. They can be made from just about any part of you at this point. So I don't understand why it's still an issue. It's holding the scientific and Medical communities back. As well as health care.

As for "fetuses", it's a good one. I'm probably contraception. Any women who wants one should be allowed an IUD. Unwanted pregnancy would drop immensely. Throwing an IUD inside a vaginal is SOOOO much cheaper than a $5000 birth and feeding and unwanted child until it turns 18 and has unwanted babies of its own for us to feed. Contraception would greatly cut down on abortions too.

Funny thing is, it would be the religious "against their beliefs" folks having illegitimate children and living off the government and quietly having abortions they don't believe in.

I live in Cedar Rapids, it's a river town, so manufacturing was/is huge. Also, we've stayed strongly union here. While in crazy liberal Iowa City, union shops don't generally survive. We aren't backwoods religious freaks. Corporate farming, Monsanto and Monsanto State University (ISU), have really killed small farmers. The majority of us work in factories, trades or office buildings. Not many of us have bookoo bucks, except successful or sell out farmers and ceo's.

Same guys made 3 more videos, Hawkeyes nice(interesting, been progressive forever, you should watch) Iowa State or Cyclones nice(interesting) and one for ESPN, big Ten stuff.

In short, beats me.

well, first Des Moines is Iowa's Dem stronghold, and our mayor seems fairly liberal to me. A dem needs more than just Des Moines to win statewide, but thats the base.

From there, we're close to Chicago on the east side. East Iowa (and DSM in the center) is blue and thats where our two Dem congressmen are, West Iowa is red and thats where our two republican congressmen are.

In a statewide race, the winner is the candidate who can move that dividing line in the state.

edit: if you look at Obama's map, thats about as much ground a Dem can give up eastward without losing.

Obama won Polk county by 14 points. Thats not unusual for a Dem.

Heidi Heitkamp is up by a full point with 100% of precincts reporting. Her lead is only 3,000 though, so maybe there's a lot of absentee/provisional ballots, but thats going to be a dem hold, and an epic fail by the GOP.

Tester is killing his opponent in Montana. (hey, winning by 5 in MT as a Dem ought to qualify as a "killing") That race was interesting, it got away from red/blue conservative/liberal and into a "manliness" race of who is the real Montanan. The democrat successfully painted his opponent as an untrustworthy city boy.

No, I was really just saying that Des Moines has more reason to be Republican with all the money and white collar business. Didn't mean to imply that it was strong red. Just more likely to swing.

OK, one more note before I go to bed. Keep an eye on CA 33rd. Its Henry Waxman's seat.

NO ONE had this race on their radar, presuming that it was rock-solid safe, and CNN even labelled this race as unopposed, because there's no republican in the race.

With 25% reporting, Waxman is losing by 3% to an independent. We've had a couple independents in the Senate, but I don't remember the last time we ever had an independent in the house, much less an indy who scalped such a high-profile entrenched congressman.

I don't live in Des Moines or even west of Des Moines, nor do I live less than 90 minutes from Cedar Rapids and it's that way HERE too.

The farms here, despite having started as small family outfits, are large corporate enterprises.

The problem is that the vast majority of jobs here are manufacturing and over the last 10 years they've lost a LOT of earning power.
