L.T. proclaims he's "the best back"
Posted by Tom Curran on September 2, 2009 9:13 AM ET (PFT)

The fact that he has turned 30 doesn't mean LaDainian Tomlinson's too old to engage in a little "neener, neener, neener."

Speaking to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, Tomlinson flashed jealousy about a recent Sporting News article in which Jim Brown interviewed Adrian Peterson.

One question posed by Brown suggests that Tomlinson is overrated.

The article, in which Brown says he believes Peterson is "the most complete back he's seen in a long time," was given to Tomlinson by a Chargers staffer.

"I was sitting there reading it thinking, 'Wow,' " Tomlinson told Farmer. "The difference with me is you can put me out on that field and there will be nothing I can't do. I won't have to come off the field. Adrian has to come off sometimes on third down. Running routes, he's still not there yet. Great downhill runner, powerful, fast, all that stuff. . . .

"But anything on that field you want me to do -- throw it, block -- I can do it. That's what I pride myself on is not having any weaknesses. And that's what makes me the best back."

It's a predictable response from Tomlinson. In 2006, he was being touted as the heir apparent to Brown. Two injury-marred seasons later, and Brown's prodding Peterson to call L.T. overrated while they sip lemonade on the veranda.

Given the pride Tomlinson takes in his craft, making sure L.T. read all about it was, in the short-term, a wise motivational move by the Chargers.

But if it causes him to push too hard from September through December, leaving him used up and/or injured come the playoffs, the smarter move might have been to put the thing in a box marked "Do not open until Christmas."

This guy has to be stupid to say something like that.

Pretty funny though.

Poll results: Allen runs by Tomlinson

July, 4, 2012 Jul 412:00PM ET
By Bill Williamson
http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest Tribal eats shorts

Longevity and Super Bowl hardware led the way.

In a surprising landslide, Marcus Allen crushed LaDainian Tomlinson in our poll, asking readers to name the best running back in AFC West history. As of 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, Allen received 64 percent of the vote, while Tomlinson received 36 percent.

I can easily see why Allen won. But it should have been closer.

Allen played 16 NFL seasons -- 11 with the Oakland Raiders and five with the Kansas City Chiefs. He is in the Hall of Fame.

Allen, who earned a Super Bowl ring and Super Bowl MVP award with the Raiders, had 12,243 yards and averaged 4.1 yards per carry. He had 123 rushing scores. He added 587 career receptions for 5,411 yards with 21 receiving touchdowns.

Tomlinson recently retired with the San Diego Chargers after re-signing with them. He played with San Diego from 2001-09 before playing the final two years of his career with the New York Jets.

Tomlinson had 13,684 yards in 11 NFL seasons and he averaged 4.3 yards per carry. He scored 145 rushing touchdowns. Tomlinson added 624 career catches for 4,772 yards with 17 receiving touchdowns. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2017.

Tomlinson has several more dominant years than Allen did, but Allen played a lot longer and won the ultimate prizes. You could go either way and be happy with this one. Thanks to everyone who played along.Tags:Oakland Raiders, San

I think the voters were biased. The citizens of San Diego are too busy surfing and ****ing hot chicks to take part in this poll.

San Diego Chargers apologize for targeting Chiefs fans

Behold the power of the internet.

Last week, a Chiefs fan running a blog out of Brooklyn, New York was sent a generic email from the Chargers trying to sell tickets to a Chargers-Chiefs game in San Diego. The fan posted it on his Arrowhead Addicts website as a way to poke fun at the Chargers desperation, and it worked.

The post was picked up at Deadspin and now the Chargers are apologizing to their upset fans who thought the team looked "pathetic."

"I totally understand that reaction,” Chargers CEO A.G. Spanos told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s disappointing because we’ve been so aggressive this year with trying to sell to new Chargers fans. ... We’re trying our best to pack the stadium with Chargers fans. This article, it hurt."

The article hit such a nerve because the Chargers are clearly struggling to sell tickets. They've had six blackouts in the last two seasons and they have to sell Norv Turner to an impatient fan base again.

“This was an overeager sales rep, I would say, who was selling groups,” Spanos said. “He acted on his own without checking with his manager. We have sold to visiting fan groups in the past. We don’t proactively solicit them for new business. That’s not a standard practice of the Chargers. ... I was disappointed the story made headlines. It paints the organization in a poor light, and that’s not how we operate."

The stakes are high this year in San Diego. The only way Spanos and the Chargers can change the narrative in San Diego is by winning playoff games again and finding a stadium solution. Both are easier said than done.

That pic six that Rivers threw yesterday against Tampa was brutal. I wish I could find a clip of it. The whole Chargers season went right down the toilet with that one play.
