Guess I'd go with Peter Gabriel Shaking the Tree CD. Only cuz it's my least favorite CD, also T Rex the Slider maybe? I don't have anything I don't like.

Because the bulk of music is purchased by people under 30 years old... so appealing to them is important. It actually did "work" for both bands. They stayed on the charts and kept selling albums. You and many of the "original" fans just didn't like it... which is completely fair. It's just a matter of the market changing and bands adjusting to it. Fans of the early stuff usually hate it, younger money-spending fans often like it. Bands don't WANT to alienate fans, they WANT to keep recording music, selling out shows and living their dreams. I can't blame them for that... it's what they do.

Again I'm not defending the practice, just trying to explain what happens in my experience. Show me a band that has never changed even a little bit what they do as the market changes. There are a few but VERY few. More power to them when they make it work.

AC/DC comes to mind... but even they changed to a degree.

Yeah, I guess it "worked" for one album. But what did The Cars do after that? Starship was never heard of again. Styx flamed out after the Kilroy Was Here album, which I'm pretty sure sold a lot of copies. I think people bought these albums on band names alone, and then realized they pretty much sucked. If I had waited another month before I bought Heartbeat City, I probably wouldn't have bought it at all.

That's a fair assesment and a good point. The fact is most musical acts have careers like most atheletes... they have their decade. The truly creative/inventive/genius stick around for multiple decades. Those are the greats and HOFers.

30 times?!? Man I don't have that kind of patience when it comes to music. I know what you're saying though, there are a lot of songs that have really grown on me over the years that I didn't care much for initially, but something about a song has to grab me right away or I lose interest pretty quickly.
