Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Here is an exact match of what I got:

I purchased the upper and lower from www.762sass.com seperately and had them put a Magpul PRS stock on for $200 extra. Ended up costing me $995 for the upper and $670 for a lower including the PRS stock. $1665 for a PRS equipped National Match rifle that would have cost around $23-2500 if purchased complete.

Anyway, I already have an AR-10A4 with a 18x Redfield Revenge Varmint scope (awesome scope for cheap) that I consistantly drill 10" targets at 550 yards with 168 grain HPBT. It was time to step up to a 1000 yard rifle.

I started searching for an AR-10T, but ended up with the NM which is nearly the same anyway. I hope I can break it in tomorrow since it will be 60 degrees with only 10-15 mph wind.

I plan on purchasing a Bushnell Elite 6500 or Nikon Monarch 32x for the NM with Armalite Mount. Harris Bypod is a must, too.

I ****ing love long range shooting.
is that an 18" barrel? I'm thinking about buying a Rock River .308 with a 20" barrel. I see absolutely no point in buying a AR10 type with a 16" barrel.

It's 20" Stainless Steel. Armalite used to build 24" .308's but found that the accuracy wasn't any better and it created a very unbalanced rifle.

I was going to buy the Rock River LAR 8 with 26" barrel last year, but held off because of the wait (just like DPMS). Definately get the 2-stage RR trigger upgrade. When I built my 24" 5.56 bull I put a RR 2-stage in and it is sweet for the money.

My father owns a DPMS .308 18" barrel. It is really accurate, too, but a trigger upgrade is a must since DPMS puts ragged raw steel garbage in for triggers.

The 5.7x28 is a relatively new round, compared to the 9mm and .45acp. One of the features of the 5.7x28 is the ability to defeat ballistic armor, even at longer distances, using what is called SS190 rounds (steel core.) The .45acp and the 9mm weren't designed with that purpose in mind, although if you're close enough with a hot load and a FMJ round, you can probably defeat ballistic armor with either of them as well.

The velocity of the 5.7 is much faster than the hottest 9mm loads, and close to double that of the hottest .45acp out of the same barrel length due to the light weight of the bullet, which is basically a rifle round. Makes a nice loud noise, kinda like a .357 magnum, but it kicks like a .22 or .25. Very controllable, and very accurate with a steady finger out to distances where the 9mm and the .45acp would just be digging in the dirt.

The bottleneck design would probably result in more reliable feeding; I haven't had any feed problems yet, after 400 rounds, even while breaking it in. The overall compactness of the round (28mm in length) makes it practical to use in an actual pistol-sized frame, and still have decent velocity. The size of the round also allows a capacity of 20 rounds in a single magazine, whereas the 9mm would have maybe 15, and the .45acp would have maybe 8 or 9 rounds in a similarly-sized pistol
tac team I was on in the late 90s almost went to a pistol like that when we switched from MP5s to the Micro Galil, couldn't get the higher ups to sign off on it, wanted to stay uniform across the board with 9mm pistol rounds for all the officers. I forget if it was the FNH though.

actually I think it was the company trying to sell us on the p90, matching rounds for rifle and pistols. So I guess it was the FN

My dad grabbed one of these this weekend:

S&W Governor. 6-round cylinder that fires .410 shells, .45 Colts and .45 ACP rounds. It's pretty much built for killing stuff. Looks like a blast to shoot.

I keep inching slowly towards picking up my Beretta 96:

That thing just feels so nice in your hand. I could live without the dual stage trigger, but everything else about the gun is just perfect for me. Oh, and it's still the best looking handgun ever made, IMO.
