I disliked The Hurt Locker because the movie was trying to be realistic, yet had the most ridiculously stupid sequences of all time. It was a pretty schizophrenic film, IMO.

I hope they got some consulting while creating ZDT.

I agree that hurt locker had some scenes that were pure hollywood, like these EOD troops being crack snipers for one... but outside of that, i thought it captured the "feel" of what it must've been like.

Having met and talked to plenty of vets and done my share of reading, its a pretty good flic, putting the viewer in the middle of a war with no front lines and in the heads of the men there.

I didn't like The Hurt Locker because of the realism, or lack thereof. It was just an insanely boring, segmented movie. Clearly a political choice for Best Picture to rival In Inconvenient Truth.

It was filmed in Jordan so it definitely looks like Iraq, and that's about it. Bull$h1t movie, and hate for you to think that reflected the realism or 'feel' as you call it, of OIF.

Tell me the ways i'm wrong, and i swear i dont mean that in some Donger-like, baiting, rhetorical way... i just want to know the truth, i think thats why so many of the vets i know and talk to open up, i get enough military slang and humor to atleast let them know i'm not some fake.

I suppose it's like a law enforcement officer watching a cop movie or TV show that is supposed to be 'gritty and realistic', and hoping that finally someone got close to authenticity. And then realizing very quickly it's nothing more but a polished version of the same soup warmed over.

Apologize for the hijack;
1) NO ONE in Iraq goes ANYWHERE alone. Nope. Never. You don't split your team up to walk alone down alleyways; you don't leave the FOB on your own (at night or any other time). This isn't the streets of the U.S. or any other western nation, or even Kuwait. You intentionally separate yourself in Iraq and you run the very real risk of starring in a grainy video with dudes in hoods standing behind you...
2) EOD techs experience extreme danger every single day (understatement), which leads them to be meticulous, professional, and they calculate risk with a surgeon-like focus. Plus they are rare; this isn't a high density skillset. So, to portray the lead character as a swaggering on-the-edge wildman who risks not only his life recklessly but those of his men...well. He'd be gone. Pack... Your... Sh*t.
3) Dove-tailing with the above; EOD does not go anywhere unescorted. They do not just go meandering around on patrols by themselves. They receive a call, and are ushered (escorted) in and out of an IED site. Unless of course they are already embedded with a unit on a mission.
4) The scene rescuing the Blackwater dudes and making nearly impossible shots by an untrained sniper with a .50 cal (again out on their own just driving around...) is just another data point that erodes realism.

There are some good scenes in that movie. Not many, but there are some. Overall, just too much to overcome and I wrote it off as tripe.
