Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

Here's a lesson to you too since you seem to be ignorant on the subject...

If you are in my neighborhood and you look suspicious and I get in my truck to see what you are doing behind my neighbors house... Just keep running, don't double back and even think about attacking me, especially if you think you are gonna slam my skull into some concrete.

Learn Grasshopper, being cockstrong can get you hurt real bad or worse in life.
No, you asked why I said he has a short fuse. I gave you a bunch of clear examples. Which is critical, because you are making a huge leap that Trayvon came out of nowhere and jumped Zimmerman. Completely leaving out the idea that Zimmerman's history is that he can't control his temper and doesn't back away from a fight, yet you believe his testimony that he just gave up and walked back to his car with his tail between his legs.

This is what bothers me. These are two guys who seemed to welcome confrontation, yet you seem intent to claim that only one of those guys wanted to get into a fight.

But can we cut the crap that Zimmerman was investigating? Zimmerman is a guy without a badge who was trying to be a cop. Even the cops said that the whole thing would have been avoided if Zimmerman did 2 simple things, which Zimmerman knew damn well what those 2 things were. He almost got himself killed and he killed a teenager because of his damn stupidity, and people shouldn't defend him for that.
He was designated with the security of his neighborhood. I would have chased the kid off too, but I never would have left the car. Woulda, coulda, shoulda...You could apply that logic to Martin as well...had he just answered the questions without the intent to hurt someone it could have been avoided as well. Martin did come find Zimmerman as well...so perhaps it was fate. Unfortunate no matter how you look at it.

Like I said, Martin acted tough guy when he shouldn't have.

Zimmerman played the part of cop because he was on some of power trip from being on Neighborhood Watch.

Zimmerman would have been fine if he followed protocol. That started a situation that never would have happened. Trayvon messed up too. But again, none of this happens if Zimmerman follows basic protocol.

A cop is doing a job and has to follow what he is told to do, a private citizen is not. This is America man not Chicago.

He was told that he didn't need to pursue Martin, Mr. Dwight Schrute did anyways, and a person died because of it.

If he simply listened to reason none of this would have occurred.

Horrible logic here...

If he simply 'didn't like skittles' he might be alive, right?

Let's get real and place the blame on the shit that actually caused the problem.

He was cutting through a gated neighborhood where he shouldnt have been, at night, and attacked a person for asking him WTF he was doing there.

No, it isn't horrible logic, when a 911 responder says "YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PURSUE THE SUSPECT." It's safe to assume that the police, who are hired to handle these responsibilities, "might" have it covered.

Who is the one with the horrible logic again?

Zimmerman has deserved absolutely all of the criticism he's received since the night of the shooting.

Have you ever pursued anyone?

I have.Multiple times.....THATS WHAT THEY ALWAYS SAY SO THEY ARE NOT LIABLE

They say 'we do not need you to do that' (which is totally DIFFERENT from 'please DO NOT do that')

but guess what?

THEN THEY KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS

Like .."what street is he on now" etc

Notice how they didnt just hang up on him?Notice how they kept asking questions even after that?

Think about it.

Sorry, I have better things to do than to be a volunteer sheriffs deputy, if I ever did see suspicious activity, I'd call 911, report the location of the perpetrator, and seeing that the police are hired to handle these types of situations, that would be it.

However, I would NOT keep pursuing the person in question to potentially endanger a potentially innocent suspect or myself in the situation. That's nothing short of common sense, I'd say.

And this here is a continuation of your ****ing stupidity.

Sure he can be criticized, I am not saying he cant be....but there has been so much that has come out since the night of the shooting that for you to say he has deserved ALL of the criticism shows me you are biased.

He certainly didn't deserve to be painted as a criminal while trayvon was painted as an angel....

And as I think you will see, I believe murder is too much here. I don't think Z should be found guilty of murder based on anything I have seen....

Juries can do horribly stupid things at times.....but honestly....I do not see how Zimmerman can be found guilty of murder.

So everyone who has called him a murderer , IMO is wrong.

Uh, Zimmerman KILLED a person AFTER he was told he didn't have to pursue that person in question and you're the one questioning MY intelligence?

Okay, bub.

Look, I am unsure if Zimmerman is guilty, but here is what we know, Z chose to act like a "heroic" volunteer sheriff, took someone else's life, and is receiving the consequences for killing a person in a situation that could have been avoided.
