Connecticut school shooting: 18 children among 27 dead

'Close to 20' dead in Connecticut school shooting, source says
Newtown, Connecticut (CNN) -- Nearly 20 people died Friday in an elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children, the source said. At a news conference Friday afternoon, state police Lt. Paul Vance would say only that there had been "several fatalities."

The school was secure, and the public was not in danger, Vance said.

"Why? Why?" one woman wailed as she walked up a wooded roadway leading from the school.

A parent who was inside the school at the time of the attack said she heard what sounded like at least 100 rounds being fired. She said she saw two school employees who had died.

'I hope my mom is ok': Tweets from the Connecticut school shooting

Hospital officials in neighboring Danbury said they were treating three people wounded in the shooting. Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the victims were in "very serious" condition.

The shooter is dead, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti. The suspect's body is in a classroom at the school, the source said.

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said a male was being questioned but he is not being called a suspect.

Federal officers in tactical gear were on the scene, coordinating with local and state police. At least four ambulances remained at the school Friday afternoon.

Police have recovered two weapons from the suspect, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, the source said. It's unclear if police killed the suspect.

'It doesn't seem possible' -- parents shocked by school shooting

Police and teachers rushed students from the building as police swarmed the area shortly after the first calls came in, around 9:40 a.m. ET. Officials moved students to a nearby firehouse, where parents frantically sought information about their children.

Third-grader Alexis Wasik said police and teachers barged into her classroom and told students to hide in the corner.

"Everybody was crying," she said. "And I just heard the police officers yelling."

Aerial images from CNN affiliate News 12 New Jersey showed police officers armed with rifles following a dog into woods near the school.

Other officers, some in tactical gear, stood around the school with guns drawn, CNN affiliate WFSB reported.

All schools in the city were on lockdown Friday as police assessed the situation, Vance said.

Gov. Dan Malloy is "horrified" by what happened, a spokesman said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration feels "enormous sympathy" for affected families and pledged federal support for state and local law enforcement.

Newtown is about 60 miles north of New York.

Sigh. Our society just can't cope with mental illness. Without a devil in all evil, we simply cannot mentally function.

I don't disagree (see post above), Mr. Crush. Not one bit.

However, the human mind is a complex chunk of software. I would rather know now if some of the pharmaceuticals he was taking (if he was) can be proven to be a contributing factor to this event than be ignorant and sit around waiting for another doctor to blow out a kid's brains (and, eventually, others as well) with a prescription pad.

He knew what he was doing otherwise he wouldn't have offed himself after his shooting spree.

My only question is when some of the dumb ****s at WPI will make a video honoring him like they did with Belcher.

I apologize for the tone of that post. I wasn't inferring that we were making excuses. It's just that this asshole shot a whole bunch of children and will never be able to face physical justice for his crimes. That is another facet of this tragedy.

I don't think it's the pharmaceuticals that created the problem. Generally, it's when you stop taking said pharmaceuticals that you can encounter these issues.

It is horrible, unspeakable, there are no words for it. I have been soberly thinking about this all afternoon since I heard the news.

I have often wondered, since this is the fourth of these types of incidents I can recall, happening in a school.

It has to be several facets coming to together. The bad experience or experiences the person has had at school, along with a lesser understanding of just how precious life really is, or how permanent that killing is.

I wonder why this has escalated, in recent years, to the point where it is not even unusual anymore to hear about another one of these horrendous tragedies.

I think it must be a result of the very stressful times, along with the constant onslaught of murder on television, then the addition of the very graphic video games and total lack of responsible parenting.

Then the fact the media makes these killers famous, it must just seem like the way out.

I understand, completely. I really do. I just think we've reached the age where it's time we start looking harder at what it is that makes these things happen. I wasn't trying to put you down at all. You're a rational fella. We just largely have zero understanding of what goes on in others' heads who have diagnosed mental illness, and it's a shame to me that if someone has bone cancer, well bless their heart that's so terrible for them, but if they're manic depressant and go on a murdering spree, they're evil monsters. What's the difference? Neither one of them asked for the ailment, and they're both ailments. Without REAL cures. Normal people like you and I don't want to hurt people. Folks who do are ****ed up. Without cure.

No man, I totally understand.

There will be people that try to void his responsibility. I don't think that's right ... or even possible.

However, we all know that, if you inject the right combination of synthesized compounds into your gray matter, you can create some pretty outrageous behavior.

If he was taking psychotropics or similar medications, I think it's something that should be investigated (I know I would if I were on the case) and here's the reason; a lot of these medications have no known or understood mechanism of action ... in other words, they (the scientists) don't even know how they work in the human body. However, in the interest of enormous profits, the pharmas do whatever they need to do in order to get this stuff through the FDA and bring it to market.

Totally agree.

That's why it's damn important that the doctors monitor the use of the drug closely. Which they rarely do.

We don't even know it the drugs were a factor, though.

Unless he was really learning disabled and when the gun stopped firing he looked down the barrel to see what's wrong and pulled the trigger.

Truth.

Ironically, my classes just finished a unit on psychological disorders.

It amazes me how many really smart kids can't - or flat out refuse - to grasp the idea that people don't choose to be depressed. That people don't choose to be bipolar. Or suffer from schizophrenia.

Sadly, there are adults that don't get it either.
