We have all heard about what happened in Aurora, Co, and I think that Gun Control is going to be a huge topic in the following months.


What measures need to be taken? Do you have any ideas that will help prevent this kind of thing from happening again as it pertains to guns?

This is related to the frustration that I have with trying to talk gun control with my leftist friends. Saying that things need to change isn't enough to me. I crave a discussion of specific policy proposals.

I think there should be some yearly training sessions as well as psychological testing occur on an annual basis.

More rigorous and monitored background checks, pertaining not only to you but to those with the ability to access your firearms.

Possibly further limit clip number.

It's more like they can be become a deterrent in various circumstances. I always like how people frame things to make them look lame when in reality you should easily be able to absorb the intention behind the post.

I don't see how a society of people with semi automatic weaponry stands a chance against a government with the technology and weaponry the US gov has.

Good for you Reaper. The truth is they will never be able to do it. All you have to do is mention accurate statistics about successful defensive gun uses vs the real rate of the gun problem and everything they say falls apart. It's been going on right here in front of your eyes for years. Gun grabbers have never been close to holding their own on this subject. They just rely on going back the the same emotional appeal. "Just look at this really bad thing that happened right here and don't consider anything else" Then there is always the name calling and red neck references. It really is beyond weak. Congratulations on being a rational independent thinker on this subject.

See there you go again. It's a deterrent, not absolute power. You do understand the difference right? At this point it's quite obvious you have no intention of being objective. You are just trying to frame everything to make it look lame so you can believe what you want to.

I don't think clip limits will do anything. Defining what constitutes the ability to access someone else's firearm seems like it'd be difficult.

A yearly proficiency exam seems like a bit much, but something like every three years seems OK. I don't know how much crime that would actually stop in any case, though.

The real problem is how we treat mental health. If we had nationalized health care like I want (), then there would be exactly no financial hindrance to seeking mental healthcare. People would take their regular checkups on an actually regular basis, and that could include a mental assessment.

You quickly run into diminishing returns with gun control measures because those are only Band-Aids put on gaping, festering, larger wounds.

When anti-gun activists list the number of deaths per year from firearms, they neglect to mention that 60% of the 30,000 figure they so often use are suicides. They also fail to mention that at least three quarters of the 12,000 homicides are criminals killing other criminals in disputes over illicit drugs, or police shooting criminals engaged in felonies. Subtracting those, we are left with no more than 3,000 deaths in the entire country that I think most would consider valid.


First thing I would do is have the media quit making thiese kids famous for doing this. THe worst the crime the more famous our media makes them. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are household names. We know everything about their life. Want to be famous, kill a bunch of kids.

Second thing I would do is take a serious look at psychological issues each of these shooters had and the psychotropics being prescribed at the time for those conditions.

I'm thinking along the lines of, the number of these things happening as gone up an incredible amount in the last few years. It's gone up enough to make me ask why? And what can we do?

There is a documented copy cat effect when it comes to these according to my wife who is almost finished with her masters. She said it's similar to suicide. People who are having these thoughts and see the attention the others got gives them motivation in a lot of cases.

Yes. Additional gun control isn't really the answer.

Our mental health care system must be dramatically improved. Tracking, diagnosis, availability, etc.

There also needs to be a standard or threshold for psychiatrists and psychologists to report threats. I'm very privacy focused but there needs to be a database that prevents people with certain conditions from passing background checks. Obviously, there must be measures to challenge your status on there if you end up on it.

Currently the reporting threshold for danger to oneself or others for psychiatrists and psychologists is subjective.
