THONOTOSASSA, Fla. – A Tampa-Bay area man who authorities say attacked his neighbor with a hammer has been charged with second degree murder with a weapon.
A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office press release says 28-year-old Jarrett Kyle Brooks was booked into jail late Saturday. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
Authorities say Brooks approached Jonathan Acree from behind at a Thonotosassa trailer park, striking him in the head and neck multiple times with a hammer.
Acree was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The sheriff's office SWAT team was called to the home where Brooks was barricaded. Authorities say he surrendered after tear gas was shot into the mobile home. There was no one else in the trailer.
Investigators have not released a motive for the attack.

There's is zero need for having those dangerous looking contoured rubber grips. Tell me why carpenters think they need this type of professional equipment? Don't even get me started on those ones with straight claws....

I'm a staunch advocate of the second amendment but equating a hammer to assault weapons doesn't do the second amendment any favors, IMO.

This nation's most recent tragedy is, in my opinion, a toxic stew of social issues that we, as a nation, need to confront honestly. The ease with which crazy people can acquire an arsenal of military grade assault weapons is only one of them.

Require a license for every hammer owned, and the license is only given when someone reaches 18, after psychological testing by a doctor, and showing expert knowledge how to use it.

The license should be renewed every 2 years, and only one renewal is required for all licences possessed.

If a person with a license commits a crime with a hammer, the doctor that gave the test should have their right to issue the licenses revoked.

People who are convicted felons, have a history of mental disorder or drug or alcohol addiction are banned from owning hammers.

Owning a hammer without the proper license is a felony with automatic prison time.

Have a damn good reason for leaving the house with a hammer.

penchief I too don't think it is reasonable or feasible for regular citizens to possess automatic weapons without a full FBI background check as well as a extremely expensive license to do so...

Can we agree on this?

It is a good start but it does nothing to control other blunt objects. Bats, golf clubs, bricks the list is endless. Much more severe steps need to be taken~

I'm an advocate of the second amendment. But if you want to see it survive, there needs to be a responsible approach to this problem or public opinion is going to turn against those who defend it unintelligently through the use of derision and scorn instead of practical solutions.

You will see the same type of backlash that you saw against the republican party's arcane stances against women's reproductive rights. You have to be reasonable. There has to be pragmatic solutions that trump ideological extremism or else you will unwittingly assist in weakening the second amendment.

It will pay those who value the second amendment to think for themselves instead of taking thier ideological talking points from the NRA lobby.
