Connecticut school shooting: 18 children among 27 dead

'Close to 20' dead in Connecticut school shooting, source says
Newtown, Connecticut (CNN) -- Nearly 20 people died Friday in an elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children, the source said. At a news conference Friday afternoon, state police Lt. Paul Vance would say only that there had been "several fatalities."

The school was secure, and the public was not in danger, Vance said.

"Why? Why?" one woman wailed as she walked up a wooded roadway leading from the school.

A parent who was inside the school at the time of the attack said she heard what sounded like at least 100 rounds being fired. She said she saw two school employees who had died.

'I hope my mom is ok': Tweets from the Connecticut school shooting

Hospital officials in neighboring Danbury said they were treating three people wounded in the shooting. Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the victims were in "very serious" condition.

The shooter is dead, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti. The suspect's body is in a classroom at the school, the source said.

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said a male was being questioned but he is not being called a suspect.

Federal officers in tactical gear were on the scene, coordinating with local and state police. At least four ambulances remained at the school Friday afternoon.

Police have recovered two weapons from the suspect, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, the source said. It's unclear if police killed the suspect.

'It doesn't seem possible' -- parents shocked by school shooting

Police and teachers rushed students from the building as police swarmed the area shortly after the first calls came in, around 9:40 a.m. ET. Officials moved students to a nearby firehouse, where parents frantically sought information about their children.

Third-grader Alexis Wasik said police and teachers barged into her classroom and told students to hide in the corner.

"Everybody was crying," she said. "And I just heard the police officers yelling."

Aerial images from CNN affiliate News 12 New Jersey showed police officers armed with rifles following a dog into woods near the school.

Other officers, some in tactical gear, stood around the school with guns drawn, CNN affiliate WFSB reported.

All schools in the city were on lockdown Friday as police assessed the situation, Vance said.

Gov. Dan Malloy is "horrified" by what happened, a spokesman said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration feels "enormous sympathy" for affected families and pledged federal support for state and local law enforcement.

Newtown is about 60 miles north of New York.

The ridiculousness is that those kids are dead and WBC continues to breath air.

It's the automtic assumption (just like has happened) that the kid is anti-social so he must have ASD and thus we must fear all kids who are like that.

I didn't immediately contemplate the damage this could do to kids on the spectrum until a dear friend of ours just posted about it on facebook because her son is autistic. I have one kid currently who I worry about who is on the spectrum (out of the crop of 4 that I currently have taking college level English classes), but that is mainly because he's in denial about it. He's far too social for this sort of violence, though, but he is prone to outbursts like, "If you all don't shut up, I'm going to cut all your ****ing heads off" or "You all are a bunch of uneducated idiots who don't deserve to breath" in the middle of class, which makes for an interesting dynamic for the classroom. His is almost more of a turrets type issue, coupled with a complete disdain for those of inferior intellect (he scored a 34 on his ACT).

Half the time, he's saying what I wish I could say though.

I don't want to completely intimate that there shouldn't be a concern because children on the ASD can (and sometimes do) exhibit behavior which can be considered ant-social.

But my biggest fear is the knee-jerk reaction that uneducated parents have when it comes to this type of behavior. I have seen on more than one occasion a parent who won't let their kid come over to our house to spend the night with my daughter because they know my son has Asperger's and they fear what he might do behaviorally.

To be frank most kids with Asperger's are more of a threat to themselves than they are to others.

And I am sure that you already know this but.....the honesty and frankness of the one child in your class is a very common attribute for kids like him. They don't have "filters" like we do so they tend to speak freely and express themselves without understanding the effect. They also for the most part have the inability to lie...they don't understand the concept.

Now they are saying he found out his Mom wanted to have him committed, which might have sparked his rage. He might have believed his mom cared more about the school kids than him.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/18...adman-to-snap/

The gunman who slaughtered 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school may have snapped because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility, according to a lifelong resident of the area who was familiar with the killer’s family and several of the victims’ families.

Adam Lanza, 20, targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown after killing his mother early Friday because he believed she loved the school “more than she loved him,” said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place. Flashman, a U.S. Marine, is the son of a pastor at an area church where many of the victims' families worship.

“From what I've been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed," Flashman told FoxNews.com. "Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off.”

A senior law enforcement official involved in the investigation confirmed that Lanza's anger at his mother over plans for “his future mental health treatment” is being looked at as a possible motive for the deadly shooting.

"He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry."- Joshua Flashman, Newtown resident familiar with Lanza family

Flashman was told Nancy Lanza had begun filing paperwork to get conservatorship over her troubled son, but that could not be confirmed because a court official told FoxNews.com such records are sealed. The move would have been necessary for her to gain the legal right to commit an adult to a hospital or psychiatric facility against his will. A competency hearing had not yet been held.

Adam Lanza attended the Sandy Hook School as a boy, according to Flashman, who said Nancy Lanza had volunteered there for several years. Two law enforcement sources said they believed Nancy Lanza had been volunteering with kindergartners at the school. Most of Lanza's victims were first graders sources believe Nancy Lanza may have worked with last year.

Flashman said Nancy Lanza was also good friends with the school’s principal and psychologist—both of whom were killed in the shooting rampage.

"Adam Lanza believed she cared more for the children than she did for him, and the reason he probably thought this [was the fact that] she was petitioning for conservatorship and wanted to have him committed," Flashman said. "I could understand how he might perceive that—that his mom loved him less than she loved the kids, loved the school. But she did love him. But he was a troubled kid and she probably just couldn’t take care of him by herself anymore."

The Washington Post reported that the distraught mother had considered moving with her son to Washington state, where she had found a school she thought could help him. Either way, according to Flashman, Nancy Lanza was at her wit's end.

A separate neighborhood source also told FoxNews.com that Nancy Lanza had come to the realization she could no longer handle her son alone. She was caring for him full-time, but told friends she needed help. She was planning to have him involuntarily hospitalized, according to the source, who did not know if she had taken formal steps.

Multiple sources told FoxNews.com Adam Lanza suffered from Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, and unspecified mental and emotional problems.

Adam Lanza has also been described by those who knew him as highly intelligent, and a spokesman for Western Connecticut State University told The Associated Press he took college classes there when he was 16, earning a 3.26 grade point average and excelling at a computer course.

Alan Diaz, 20, who was friends with Adam Lanza at Newtown High School, said the Lanza he knew was ill-at-ease socially, but not a monster.

"He was a wicked smart kid," Diaz told FoxNews.com by email. "When I first met him, he wouldn't even look at you when you tried to talk to him. Over the year I knew him, he became used to me and my other friends, he eventually could have full conversations with us.

"I've heard him laugh, he has even comforted me once in a hard time I had," Diaz said. “A big part of me wishes I never dropped contact with him after he left high school, felt like I could have done something."

Flashman said nobody will completely understand why Adam did what he did.

“No one can explain Adam Lanza besides God and Adam Lanza, and I don’t even think Adam Lanza could explain Adam Lanza, to be honest with you.”

Who knows what the kid thought. He was mentally ill and could have been paranoid or having delusions. And who could blame him? If he lived with a paranoid prepper who was convinced the world was ending and she was running out of time then she was by no means the rock of stability that someone teetering would need. Quite the opposite.

Not to mention, he works in neonatal intensive care. He's likely seen his share of tragedy and miracles. I imagine he's helped many people in his work and his natural inclination was to help others again. I appreciate him and others like him so much more than the kneejerk assholes who want to grab their guns and go out and 'fix it.'

He wants his daughter's death to not be in vain and to instead be a catalyst for love, healing, and change. I think with people like himself in the forefront it will happen. God bless him and all of the other people hurting because of this horrible situation.

I'm licensed as is my wife. let's just suppose that I decide to go to school functions and break the rules by carrying. let's just SUPPOSE that. what's in my pants ain't none of your business. it'll never happen to me...but a psycho who wants to take a buncha people out is gonna go to a crowd and schools are an obvious target. so...if I supposedly carry on school property and bust a cap in some psychos ass...go ahead and throw me in jail. I can live with that.

a few times since all this happened I've cried like a baby for those little folks. (the tribute on The Voice killed me)
what a monstrous world...

No training teachers or forcing them to carry is not the answer. Unless you are training them in SWAT practices then you are placing them in an situation they are untrained to handle.

Start treating this as a homeland security issue. We spend BILLIONS making other countries 'safer' and yet we can't send our own children to school without worrying about their safety? Why not instead create what the high schools have in Student Resource Officers/SRO. Except have off duty, retired police and/ or national guard officers who are already trained. Train them to for specific situations relative to schools and children. In that they are part of the school, the officer friendly. They get to know the students and become the face of safer schools. Don't have them in regular uniform but rather special polos and pants like in the HS. That is less intimidating to school children.

Use money from the WOT to supply these officers with video surveillance of the campus, hallways, and parking lot. I believe these provisions will not stop school shootings (as they did not in VT) but it reduces the likelihood of it happening in smaller venues like elementary schools and middle schools.

Fund them with money from the freakin war on terror.
