(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

Their image as far as their supporters go is great. Their non-supporters are never going to agree with anything they say, unless they capitulate to gun control, which they are never going to do.

In case anyone out there is outraged or appalled at the whole "lets have armed guards in school" idea, and are ready to write off the NRA because of that...

Barbara Boxer actually came out with almost the same plan yesterday. (She's also proposing an AWB, but she did announce a "give money to states to pay for armed guards in schools" bill)

When the junior Senator from CA and the National Rifle Association are almost shaking hands on anything, then barring a veto it obviously could happen. I assume Boxer is not some rogue looney within the Dems, and it'll give the entire GOP something to vote for and triumphantly announce they did something.

and, he's completely unknowledgable about guns to begin with.
he's one that thinks 'assault' weapons mean full-auto scary looking guns. not realizing what sem-auto function is;
didn't know that last assault weapon ban didn't do shit except change the cosmetics of what contitutes and assault weapon etc.

so, it's hard to discuss it with him

don't get me wrong; love him to death and that won't ever change. but we're definitely at the extrme opposites of teh spectrum on this one.

I like the idea... especially the trained volunteers idea (almost like a Neighborhood Watch concept for guarding schools).

However this can't be the only solution. A comprehensive strategy is needed that includes increased gun regulations.

Why can't state's pay for this?

You'd think they and/or their local districts have just as much desire and interest to make their school's safer.

My only complaint is mentioning the shooter's name. There ought to be some kind of voluntary agreement not to give the killer the infamy he may have wanted.

Unfortunately, it probably wouldn't work anyway. If we had a media blackout of the shooter's ID (similar to not reporting names of rape victims or kids charged with crime), it would just appear on Drudge and the smoking gun within the day anyway.
