NRA: Society has left children 'utterly defenseless'

NRA: Society has left children 'utterly defenseless'

CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

Their image among supporters is not great. However, it would have WAY improved had they taken a logical stance. I heard a statistic that somewhere around 70% of NRA members support some form of stronger gun control laws.

My only concern is how big of a **** up do you have to be to get armed guard duty at a school?

Not at all. I just couldn't remember what happened with those guys. It seems relevant to the proposal but I'm mostly asking out of curiosity. Does anyone remember?

I'd love to see some reporter ask Obama if he agrees or disagrees with that quote, and watch him stammer around and try to get away from answering it. Like he always does.
I'd love to see the NRA explain how a potential terrorist or someone on their proposed "National Database of Mentally Ill People" will be prevented from getting a gun with 40% of gun purchases requiring zero background check.

Too bad the NRA leadership were too gutless to take questions today.

The problem with the police back then is that they still treated every situation as a hostage situation, even when there was an active shooter.

As a direct result of Columbine, police tactics shifted dramatically in these situations, if you have an active shooter who does not seem to be interested in taking hostages, then you have to go in, walk past and ignore any victims you may see, ignore everything, just go straight to the shooter, risk your own life as a cop, and take him out at all costs. That tactic was used at Virginia Tech and probably saved a lot of lives.

Virginia Tech had an entire armed campus police force.

Didn't stop the deadliest school shooting in US history.

Any change no matter how small, if it will help protect children (even a little bit), I'm all for it. And, the dumb ass NRA had the perfect chance to get "good guy" points and they BLEW IT!

Sandy Hook had no armed guards. That "campus" is a hell of a lot smaller than Va Tech.

Nothing can stop these shootings. However, this would probably mitigate it far more than any non-crazy gun control idea thats been thrown out there.

I think a University is FAR bigger than an elementary school.
