(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

Yet another example of how inept the NRA is - I wouldn't expect better from essentially a neocon lobbying arm. The GOA is infinitely better at making the case for and defending gun rights.

Really? I'm not an NRA member, but they did a horrible job today. Literally all they had to do was go up and say these two stats (quoted from the GOA article I just linked to):

Those two stats are enough to ether any gun-grabbers' arguments. Instead, they chose to ramble on about armed guards on the playground at school. This is why it's so easy for liberals to portray 2nd Amendment supporters as a bunch of gun-toting nutjobs.

I was really hoping the NRA would have taken a different stance on this. I really do believe it would have worked in their favor. They could give a little and get more supporters. Oh well, it is what it is. I don't like the feeling I have towards the NRA, I think they give all gun owners a bad rep. I wish it was different.

Columbine had two armed "uniformed community service officers" and both were present the day of the Columbine shooting.

So the most deadly school shooting in US history... Virginia Tech had an armed campus police force. That didn't deter the shooter.

The second worst school shooting in US history (before Sandy Hook) had two armed community service officers and that didn't deter the shooters.

I don't know of a regular practices of disarming citizens made by those dictators. Hitler certainly wouldn't disarm Germans (in fact, he armed them). Of course, Hitler did disarm the Jews, and many others, of everything, including their lives. Did Stalin institute a campaign of gun prohibition?

Mao disarmed those with firearms? I'm not sure that there was a significant gun ownership population in the first place in China in the 1940s-1970s. If anything, it would have been the wealthy that had such technology. And the wealthy were pretty much beaten down in China, not because they had guns, though.
