NRA: Society has left children 'utterly defenseless'

CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

If it makes it more difficult for someone who wants to do harm to acquire a gun then it helps.

Since conservatives don't care about taking action after mass shootings... let's frame this in another area that they claim to care about... stopping terrorism.

What is to stop an Al Qaeda member from going to a gun show and purchasing guns to commit a mass shooting? They know they can go to a gun show, easily get as many guns as they want and not have to worry about a background check that would cross reference people on the Terrorist Watch List.

I don't know, a background check on an idiot could come back reporting he has no criminal offenses or other illegal activity.

Or, it could come back that this person is an idiot (unstable, whatever) and should not be able to purchase a gun.

Unstable means that they have been involved in an incident of some kind. The generic idiot that has had no interface with any law enforcement agency would most likely be given a permit.

I think your use of the word Idiot, is not what you wanted to portray in your comments. I'd find a word that might be better. An idiot, although not smart enough to have a high paying job, just might be a normal enough person to know right from wrong and live in a manner suited to someone that believes that way.

Yes, being an idiot will not likely prevent one from purchasing a gun.

I hate to agree with you on anything. I really do. But I agree with you 100% on this.

Oh by the way, my minor children both attend the same High School. At this High School there is an armed police presence (with a car parked in the parking lot of the main entrance), there is at least one armed truant officer always present, and several of the teachers are armed with CCW permits.

The NRA destroyed it's already weakening image today. Thank God. Enough's enough.

The other thing about B-Rush is that he never lied. Coach Self would be like, “Did everyone make curfew last night? If you didn’t make curfew, raise your hand.” All of us that broke curfew kept our hands down — except B-Rush. He’d raise his hand and tell on himself. Coach Self would ask him why he didn’t make curfew and he’d say, “Because the club was crackin’!” Everyone would laugh and he’d make B-Rush run a little bit.

That's the point. You're suggesting imposing expensive regulation with no thought on how it would be paid for.
