NRA: Society has left children 'utterly defenseless'

NRA: Society has left children 'utterly defenseless'

CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

Yep. Those poor shooters - their guns kidnapped them, and forced them (at gun point?) to kill all those people. I guess you think they're victims, too. And beer causes drunk driving, right? And just imagine what would happen if beer ever used a gun? I shudder at the thought.

Good old Wickedson. Your special brand of complete stupidity is truly unrivaled.

Wickedson, are you fully aware that a gun/weapon is an inanimate object? It cannot do anything without human interaction. You don't want people with weapons to gain access to to schools and other places where mass violence could be perpetrated.

Last time I looked I have never seen a weapon that walked on it's own. An armed security guard would have one of those inanimate objects and be trained in using it and just might be able to stop a PERSON with a weapon from entering to do harm.

In your way of thinking we should not be able to buy automobiles as they kill thousands every year!

Hospitals should be shutdown nation wide, are you aware of how many people die in hospitals?

Not a lot of good answers here for anyone involved. Having said that the NRA came off really amateurish...for such a big powerful organization I can't believe what an inept tone deaf message they put out.

Emboldened their base a bit (I believe) but seemed to turn off people who are generally apathetic or neutral towards them.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Seriously. Their solution is "Give us more money."

They want every school to have 1 or 2 armed guards? Columbine had an armed guard, and it stopped nothing.

Want to arm every teacher? Should teachers now major in law enforcement instead of education? What happens when 60-70 yr old Mz Robbins can't operate the gun? It's absolutely ludicrous to say that introducing millions of guns into our classrooms is a good idea.

Just because an armed guard at Columbine didn't stop them, it doesn't prove it would be ineffective. That's like saying a locked door at the Newtown School didn't stop this kid, therefore there's no point to a locked door.
I'm a parent or two elementary school kids and I'd be more comfortable knowing an armed guard was there, personally.
The kid in the Newtown case seemed particularly cowardly- they say he basically shot himself when he heard first responders. If he knew an armed guard was at the school he may have never tried at all. He seems like he was a cowardly pussy.

The NRA basically walked up on a podium and described the plot of the movie Kindergarten Cop as their solution.

Really, I think having an armed guard at schools is good. But for the NRA to say that's the only solution we have is weak sauce.

And as far as the Newtown shooter being a coward. Yes, he was, but these shooters have proven that some want to be taken alive, some don't. Some will stop when confronted, some won't.

Grabbing a pic of Gandhi a previous post, I read this quote and found it interesting, ""where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence." - Gandhi

I don't really care much what the NRA said. I think it was ill-advised on their part to hold a press conference, at all. From a PR standpoint it was a stupid move. They should have sent out a written statement and that's it.

Anyone could have predicted it wouldn't go well for them.

True, I will say that when I was badgering them for not speaking, cold water was thrown on me when Obama was asked why he hasn't been talking about gun control sooner, and all he had was "I'm busy with other things..." when in reality it's all politics.

Anyways, got to go, GO ILLINI!!!!

I am opposed to the ideas of cops at the schools. I support armed teachers, but the last thing we need is to turn our schools into the police state our country is becoming. Where does it end? TSA at the schools? We gonna start letting worthless tsa pedophiles molest are children at school now too?

This is getting ****ing insane, yeah school got shot up, yeah a bunch of very young children got executed, it's not the guns fault nor the gun owners across the country, it's the result of decades of liberal propaganda destroying the ideas of religion, family, perpetuating violence through media, encouraging these actions with non-stop press coverage, doping up the whole country's youth on ridelin and adderal, suspending and punishing kids for playing with "gun fingers", that's the shit that contributes to these acts not gun ownership that has been working fine for 200+ yrs.
