Best Sci-Fi Movies of the last 5 Years

So 2008-2012 only...I'm trying to find some that I haven't seen.

The best for me are District 9, Star Trek, and...I can't even think of a third film worthy of getting my top nod.

Not really a movie - but Torchwood; Miracle Day. It's a British tv series that started out with Torchwood seasons 1 & 2 and continued with the best of the group in Torchwood; Children of Men. Probably not for everyone but it's one of my favorite si-fi series. Take it for what it's worth - I also love Lost Girl on the si-fi channel.

If I wasn't a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, I would have turned Tree of Life off pretty quickly. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.

They are a little older and more in the dark fantasy genre (but people are including "Pan's Labyrinth" so figure it's okay) but I really liked "Night Watch" and the sequel "Day Watch". They are Russian films that came out in '04 and '06. Pretty bizarre but an entertaining ride.

I think Lynch has admitted he blew it. I know theres a TV cut of it that added in a few hours of material. It shows up from time to time when its broadcast, but i dont think its on DVD?

How come almost all of the space Sci-fi movies end the same? Big battle of my species versus yours. Same with Prometheus. Cool from beginning to middle but ending was same old crap of brainless chase scenes until everyone gets blown up.

I wouldn't know. Nor do I care.

And he can disassociate himself with or beg for forgiveness - I don't care. That's like Hitler apologizing for World War II.

Heres some stuff i dug up on IMDB about it.

David Lynch (13 January 2006) : "Dune I didn't have final cut on. It's the only film I've made where I didn't have, I didn't technically have final cut on The Elephant Man but Mel Brooks gave it to me, and on Dune the film, I started selling out even in the script phase knowing I didn't have final cut, and I sold out, so it was a slow dying- the-death and a terrible terrible experience. I don't know how it happened, I trusted that it would work out but it was very naive and, the wrong move. In those days the maximum length they figured I could have is two hours and seventeen minutes, and that's what the film is, so they wouldn't lose a screening a day, so once again it's money talking and not for the film at all and so it was like compacted and it hurt it, it hurt it. There is no other version. There's more stuff, but even that is putrefied."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/trivia

•Theatrical version is 137 minutes long; TV version seen both in syndication and on most cable networks, prepared under protest from (and eventually disowned by) director David Lynch, is approx. 176 minutes long (minus commercials) and features outtakes, additional footage, test close-up shots of certain actors, and even fabricated (i.e. "cheated") footage (made up of repeated stock footage from certain points in the film to make it appear that footage had been added--one reason why Lynch took his name off the credits of the TV version). The TV print credits Alan Smithee as director. Whereas the theatrical release features a brief introductory narration spoken by Princess Irulan, the TV version has a longer spoken introduction by an uncredited male narrator, with still paintings and drawings used to bring the viewer up to speed on the story. The TV version (which has been released on Japanese LaserDisc and overseas DVDs) has additional footage of the Fremen that lacks the blue color in their eyes, indicating that the scenes were cut before special f/x were added.

Whatever the case, it wouldnt shock me if someone tried rebooting this movie someday.

I thought District 9 was really good up until the point where it broke out of the documentary format. Then it just kind of devolved into a mediocre sci-fi action flick with huge plot holes.

Moon is excellent, though. Sam Rockwell is amazing, and the soundtrack is great.
