Best Sci-Fi Movies of the last 5 Years

So 2008-2012 only...I'm trying to find some that I haven't seen.

The best for me are District 9, Star Trek, and...I can't even think of a third film worthy of getting my top nod.

Not really a movie - but Torchwood; Miracle Day. It's a British tv series that started out with Torchwood seasons 1 & 2 and continued with the best of the group in Torchwood; Children of Men. Probably not for everyone but it's one of my favorite si-fi series. Take it for what it's worth - I also love Lost Girl on the si-fi channel.

heh, i wanted to see the reaction. I tried watching it on Cinemax one afternoon. Couldnt make it past the 40 minutes of Earth creation and Dinosaur scene.

If I wasn't a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, I would have turned Tree of Life off pretty quickly. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.

They are a little older and more in the dark fantasy genre (but people are including "Pan's Labyrinth" so figure it's okay) but I really liked "Night Watch" and the sequel "Day Watch". They are Russian films that came out in '04 and '06. Pretty bizarre but an entertaining ride.

I think Lynch has admitted he blew it. I know theres a TV cut of it that added in a few hours of material. It shows up from time to time when its broadcast, but i dont think its on DVD?

How come almost all of the space Sci-fi movies end the same? Big battle of my species versus yours. Same with Prometheus. Cool from beginning to middle but ending was same old crap of brainless chase scenes until everyone gets blown up.

It's the only film I've made where I didn't have, I didn't technically have final cut on The Elephant Man but Mel Brooks gave it to me, and on Dune the film, I started selling out even in the script phase knowing I didn't have final cut, and I sold out, so it was a slow dying- the-death and a terrible terrible experience. I don't know how it happened, I trusted that it would work out but it was very naive and, the wrong move. In those days the maximum length they figured I could have is two hours and seventeen minutes, and that's what the film is, so they wouldn't lose a screening a day, so once again it's money talking and not for the film at all and so it was like compacted and it hurt it, it hurt it. There is no other version. There's more stuff, but even that is putrefied."

I thought District 9 was really good up until the point where it broke out of the documentary format. Then it just kind of devolved into a mediocre sci-fi action flick with huge plot holes.

Moon is excellent, though. Sam Rockwell is amazing, and the soundtrack is great.

Avatar is Dancing with Wolves on another planet. I said before I saw it and still do after I watched it. Dancing with Wolves was a lot better movie.
