Obama’s 23 Planned Executive Actions On Guns

Here is a list provided by the White House of the 23 executive actions President Obama plans to take to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11. Nominate an ATF director.
12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

The kind of drugs used for what I believe is the largest complaint, depression, are what have lead to psychotic episodes of gun violence. Some of these EO's are interesting...

The guy responsible for Operation Fast and Furious gets to decide who is dangerous and shouldn't have a gun. How ironic.

Don't cops already check the serial number to see if a seized gun is stolen? Now you have to go through a background check before you can get your legally owned gun back? I could see this easily being abused.

DHS already runs mock active shooter scenarios at schools. I know these EO's aren't specific, but I would guess that DHS will be more involved than ever.

I didn't know that doctors could ask about your guns in the first place. Many patients will just lie about their guns, or flat out refuse to answer the question.

And I was correct in thinking that DHS will expand its role because of EO 12 and 19.

I was right. It didn't take Manet Napolitano long to announce it. The DHS will expand its role in our every day lives.

Janet Napolitano, head of the Department of Homeland Security, released a statement Wednesday saying she is "proud to support" the Obama administration's efforts to "combat gun violence in our country." Here's more from Napolitano's statement:

In the aftermath of the tragic Newtown shooting, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), together with the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the FBI have worked to identify measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings. In the coming days, DHS will expand and formalize coordination of ongoing efforts intended to prevent future mass casualty shootings, improve preparedness, and to strengthen security and resilience in schools and other potential targets. DHS will work with partners at all levels of government, to address five critical areas intended to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings in the United States: Prevention, Protection, Response, Education, and Research/Evaluation. DHS will also work with law enforcement to refresh, expand and prioritize the implementation of nationwide public awareness efforts such as the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign. This is a critical issue that requires immediate attention and I look forward to supporting the President and this Administration as we move ahead.

The NRA said a few weeks ago that we should have more armed law enforcement officers in schools. They got roasted by the left-wing media for it. And if I remember right, Obama said he didn't think more guns was the answer.

Now he's ready to provide funding for more guns in schools by hiring more SRO's. Its the same damn thing the NRA proposed.

But I'm sure the liberals are ok with more guns in schools now, since Lord Obama wants it.

Third, Obama is not going to take your guns. He isn't going to take your Handgun, your great grandfathers musket, your 12 gauge, or .22. The only gun laws he messed with in his first term actually decreased regulation (allowing them into National Parks).

Fourth, the NRA is using your fear and paranoia to increase its own membership, as well as increase the sales of firearms. And they are very good at it. This happens after every shooting. You know whatever, I'm not going to tell you what to spend your money on, but the NRA exists to to sell guns, not protect your rights, I would suggest at least thinking about that.
