After the fact - KC's smoking ban, three+ years later

So, now that we have had time to adjust and absorb the smoking ban, how do you feel about it? Was it a good thing, a bad thing, still an unholy infringement on our "civil rights", or do you just not care one way or another?

Poll to come.

Love it. Going out to bars in KC is much more enjoyable now and now I don't stink like cig smoke when we head back to the hotel. We only come down about 6 to 7 times a year we have enjoyed it more when we are in town.

As a smoker, I voted "don't care," but overall it's a good thing. It sucks having to step outside this time of year, but if I don't like it, I still have two options. Plenty of bars here have created outdoor smoking areas, many with heaters.

It has saved me money. I don't go out near as often as I did pre ban.

You've decided to not go out because of the smoking ban? I find that interesting. Is it more that you can't stand not being able to smoke while having a drink, or just are in disagreement with the ruling?

When this vote was going on, there was a ton of emotion about it around town. I remember being at a 54th Street Grill and Bar one afternoon, and I asked the bartender how she liked it. She was pissed about it, giving the whole civil rights angle. She was also absolutely convinced that establishments such as the one she worked at would suffer, some critically so. As it stands today, it would appear that MORE people go out to me, as these places are constantly packed.

heck, I smoke and I prefer a smoking ban. It seems to make me sick and always coughing up shit whenever I smoke inside (very rarely, maybe only sometimes when I've been drinking). It's really no trouble for me to step outside for a butt. Plus it does bother non smokers, people shouldn't be bothered by other people's bad habits and that goes for me too.

I don't like my clothes smelling like smoke when getting home from the bars.

But then again I don't think it's a deterrent on whether I go out or not. I just don't like being engulfed in the shit.

I don't smoke cigs unless I'm drunk and someone wants to offer me one to chill with them on the bar patio outside or something...I don't mind that. Can't remember if I've ever bought a pack for myself though. Just not into it...don't see how people get addicted to it...I think I'm just one of those who couldn't get addicted even if I tried.

lol, you could easily get addicted if you smoked every day. It's harder than heroin to get off of once you are.

You've never seen one law that wasn't Nazi-like oppression, but this you're good with.

And yet another smoking ban thread that misses the point entirely. Any smoker who claims a ban violates their "rights" is an idiot. Just like the anti-smoking crowd who claim they somehow have a "right" to a smoke free environment when they go out.

Smoking bans are an infringement on ONE person's rights... the OWNER of the PRIVATE PROPERTY. That's it.

The only thing to debate is wether or not you feel it is justified for the government (in this case city) to step in and tell a private property owner what is ok behavior for adults on their property.

Smoking bans don't hurt me in the least but I still find them to be massive violations of private property rights.

One of the big worries/complaints back when this was all going down was how these bar owners would suffer immeasurably by the smoking ban. How people would just not come around anymore and how the owners would go broke becasue of it.

Three years later it's safe to say that was nothing but a bunch of panicked chicken little thinking. The bar scene around town doesn't seem to be hurting for business.
