Do you favor universal background checks?

Ninety-two percent of Americans favor background checks for all potential gun buyers, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Universal background checks are one of the proposals that President Obama has called on Congress to pass as part of his proposal to combat gun violence in the wake of the massacre in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December.

Licensed gun dealers already must run background checks, but unlicensed dealers and private sellers, many of whom sell guns at gun shows or over the internet, are not required to do so.

Support for universal background checks went across party lines:
89 percent of Republicans
93 percent of Democrats and Independents were in favor
93 percent of gun households
85 percent of those living in a household with a member of the National Rifle Association

That is what I needed. I was under the impression we needed to do someting that addresses an issue. No I see we just need to do something. And better yet someting that adds bureaucracy. And costs a lot. I'm on board now. Can we tax rich people to pay for it? Can we have a buy a gun program for the poor?

This is BS! It's not that there's infringement on every right, it's that there can be conflicting rights.
Or something was just not a right. There are not a lot of these on every right. I mean do we have background checks for speech, faith? Do we have permits for speech or faith? No. Many of these types of things are infringements.

Oh, and it's legal to own, even rent a tank. No need for the cannon to do damage just drive it through a store. You can also buy a working fighter jet. That is if you can afford it.

Chicago is also trying to pass a law that would require people to report when they've had a gun stolen. I don't know all the details but it seems logical to me as a way to track whether people are honestly having their guns stolen, or are lazy with their responsibilities or are trafficking. Again, that doesn't mean if you have a gun stolen, you'll lose your FOID or FFL, but it will be a way to track negligent/immoral/illegal actions.

If you haven't, I urge you to watch the Daily Show segment on the ATF. In it, they report that gun dealers are sometimes only evaluated ONCE every 17 YEARS!

laws laws laws. as of right now, laws are no deterrent to anything, just look at the ever-growing prison system. more laws and absence of guns will not make people good. do you know what will?

Even though I think you're taking your argument to an even stupider level with "guns for the poor" (which the militia ideologues should be on board with ), I like that you bring up the $$$ argument. I don't know the end all be all law that will prevent all crime.

I see what you're saying with the "well if I give someone a gun that commits a crime, I had no ill intent therefore I am innocent" argument. The problem is that we live in a big boy world, and we understand that's too easy a veil.

If you want to go the philosophical route of "There is no way to stop all crime, anarchy is just as effective." Go for it, share your wisdom.
