Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?
From Obama's inaugural speech.

"We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall ... Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Today Obama placed an original place for the battle for gay civil rights, Stonewall along side the same original battleground's for women's rights(Seneca Falls) and African-American rights(Selma).

So the poll question is............

Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?

I couldn't care less if they want to legalize same sex marriage. What I can't figure out is whether it's more about the title or the benefits that come along with it. I understand it's mainly about principle, but what are the other reasons? I guess all of them? If just given the benefits of marriage and calling it something else, would that be sufficient? Civil Unions didn't seem to be good enough, but I haven't done the research as to why.

A marriage is a social contract by law. Essentially, it allows two people to be treated as one interchangeable person. That gender of the participants should have no bearing on how the government recognizes that contract. Churches shouldn't be compelled to perform religious ceremonies that are proscribed by their dogma. The drama is unnecessary.

With that being said: The USC begins with "We the people..." If you believe that God gives you the power, that is certainly your right. If you wish to vote on issues based on your religious views, that is also certainly your right. Wherever you believe that you derive that power from isn't relevant to the law. The law is only concerned with the fact that you do have that power and it must be recognized.
