Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?

From Obama's inaugural speech.

"We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths that all of us are created equal is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall ... Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Today Obama placed an original place for the battle for gay civil rights, Stonewall along side the same original battleground's for women's rights(Seneca Falls) and African-American rights(Selma).

So the poll question is............

Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?

I'm not sure about most people, but is one any more right than the other? It comes down to essentially "forcing" something on one group or the other.

I'm sure about most people. One is more right than the other. One stands for extending freedom, the other quietly agrees with Fred Phelps.

The results of this poll are kind of shocking. I'm not stunned very often, but wow.

We forced white men to accept women. We forced white America to accept blacks as equals. You can't win this argument, ever. Because the bottom line is discrimination against a fellow citizen for being who they are.

I understand your religious objections. For a Christian who takes the bible literally I can understand how you came to your viewpoint. And you are entitled to your viewpoint. But..............

The citizens who are a minority have a right to be protected from their rights being violated by the majority. It's a core part of who we are as Americans. We let Nazi's march in Skokie, Ill, allow people to use the n- word etc. But the Nazi, Jew, Gay and black are all protected under the same constitutional umbrella.

You are right it was founded on religious freedom. Also by allowing gay marriage nobody is forcing anyone one to accept anything. Those who chose to not approve of it can continue to do so. What gays should do is proclaim gay is a religion. They then could demand equal rights and get a tax break~
