Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?

From Obama's inaugural speech.

"We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall ... Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."

Today Obama placed an original place for the battle for gay civil rights, Stonewall along side the same original battleground's for women's rights(Seneca Falls) and African-American rights(Selma).

So the poll question is............

Is the battle for gay rights a civil rights battle?

A judge can marry you. There's nothing religious about marriage.

You can marry a hooker at 4:00 in the morning by an Elvis impersonator in Vegas. Yeah the sanctity of marriage argument is rather weak to say the least~

Yep. Just like 10 years ago, nobody was suggesting we legalize Gay marriage. 4 years ago, the Democratic nominee for President even opposed it.

Great. Then we all agree that the Feds or the State cannot dictate to religious organizations that perform marriages what the parameters of those ceremonies will be. John and Jim Doe will have the option to go to the justice of the peace for their "marriage", and not have automatic rights to dictate that the Catholic Church or the Baptists "marry" them.

I think that is all they are asking for. No one wants to force churches to marry gays. If a church wants to marry gays it should be up to them.

(shrug) Okay.

What we're talking about is being recognized by the government as a married couple, the government being the only organization to recognize marriage that matters. Nobody can force a church to marry them, any more than I, a non-catholic, can force a priest to perform a ceremony.

Gay People deserve no special rights for being gay. This is getting beyong ridiculous. Sorry.

AGAIN

We are not even talking about religious marriage.

We are talking about state recognized marriage. God has nothing to do with it.

My view is that we should try to disentangle what has historically been the issue of the word marriage, which has religious connotations to some people, from the civil rights that are given to couples, in terms of hospital visitation, in terms of whether or not they can transfer property or Social Security benefits and so forth. So it depends on how the bill would’ve come up. I would support a civil union that provides all the benefits that are available for a legally sanctioned marriage.

And it is then, as I said, up to religious denominations to make a determination as to whether they want to recognize that as marriage or not.

Washington governor signs gay ‘marriage’ bill

Note: This article has been edited to correct an earlier version that indicated the bill’s language against marriage “discrimination” by religious organizations was in the final bill. However, that language was dropped prior to final passage. We regret the error.

February 13, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Gov. Christine Gregoire of Washington State has signed into law a gay “marriage” bill.

Gregoire, a lame-duck Democrat governor who proposed the bill earlier this year, celebrated the end of defining marriage as between a man and a woman as she signed the bill on Monday.

“I’m proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal,” she said.

The bill makes Washington the sixth U.S. state to redefine marriage, in addition to the District of Columbia.

Local religious leaders have been particularly alarmed about the bill because it will force facilities owned by churches that are regularly used for marriages to be offered to homosexual couples.

The bill text originally stated that religious organizations that provide “accommodations, facilities, advantages, privileges, services, or goods related to the solemnization or celebration of a marriage” to the public must offer all those goods for use to homosexual couples seeking marriage or else face a penalty for discrimination. ....

If that's your argument, it's a terrible rebuttal.
